Things seem tense on here. lets lighten it up- Simple question, who is your unofficial school you like/follow/cheer for? I'm a MS guy, but have always liked GW. they are oddly similar in a lot of ways. One known for O, other D. Both are/were known for Saturday afternoons. Both towns have the worst street signs ever. Yours?

I’m wondering why the West Aurora Blackhawks didn’t “come home” to the DVC instead of going Southwest Prairie? The 5 Napers and Valleys offer multiple levels of competition (Frosh, Soph, JV, Varsity, and in most sports, A and B or two JV teams), same or better travel distance, plus size fit - WA would be the biggest school along with Neuqua and Waubonsie the smallest with 1000 less kids,.... all the things WA was looking for!!

Well because we share so many similarities it would have to be MC
I’ve recently really liked watching/rooting for Maine South...I know for some that sounds like rooting for the house at a casino... I played against them every year way back in the 1980’s and I absolutely hated them, because even back then they were always very good.
As time passed I started to appreciate a public school that could be that consistently great and reload year in and year out. Just an admirable program that puts together really good teams and great kids.
A couple of years ago a friend, who coaches at New Trier, passed this story on to me...After NT beat them during the regular season and won the conference...an unnamed MS coach sent his Christmas card of him posing with the state championship trophy to the NT coaches....still cracks me up.

Mt. Carmel Caravan. Some of the toughest, yet kindest and most service oriented guys I know. After we would play MC, we were sore for weeks. They just seem to hit harder than any other team I can remember playing against. Also, St. Ignatius. My dad and cousins went there. In fact, I almost went there all the way from palatine. Although, my old man always joked that I probably would not have been admitted. I think he’s right. To me, they are the Northwestern of high school football. Decent little program on the rise - LA’s own Dowdle should help even more. Really bright players and future.

I would say Brother rice. HC Mitchell for Rice in the 80’s hated St Rita. One of the best rivalries in Illinois highschool football. Especially the games at 63rd and Claremont. Mud bowl games and low scores. (7-6). Wouldn’t be a linemen without blood on their jerseys on both sides after the game. You felt the hatred in the air.

Favorite public school team to watch is Geneseo. They play physical and just want to run the ball through you.

That’s my argument but some say there’s no where to put them. They’re more than double the size of Prairie Ridge.
Some teams I like other than who I consider my teams.
Marian Central:Have always liked the community and feel of games at their place despite the refs. Just hard nosed kids and solid coaching.
Small schools: Lena Winslow (tough kids), saw them live twice.
Small Catholics: Leo and hales, tradition from waaaay back and respect that they’ve created a solid school community for young black men.
The Brook: when I was a kid I saw Marcus smith play and thought he was the greatest player I’d ever seen.
Rita: college roommate was a Rita guy. Went to a couple games in the early 2000s. Fun venue an great fans.
Phillips: still think their story will be a movie one day.

Loyola Academy. I've lived in their "territory" since 1975, and have come to know many LA parents. They were always first class good sports. Today, still, I speak with a few after Mass about our two teams.
I've always admired DeLaSalle. As my Irish aunts would say, "they're a tough lot." They always came to play regardless of the odds. Like Mt. Carmel, "De" suffered through some hard times and wound up stronger for the effort.
It shouldn't matter, but both of these schools have really outstanding concession stands. Okay, it matters.

The Hilltoppers of Joliet Catholic. MC started playing them opening game every year in the 90’s. They always ran it down your throat, and always ripped your head off on defense. Nothing fancy, just old school football done very well.
One of the best Carmel teams I’ve ever seen came into the semi-finals at Memorial stadium 12-0 back in 92 led by some guys named Matt Cushing and Donovan McNabb. MC had dominated JC 27-6 to open the season, however this time around the Hill Toppers shut down the Vaunted Caravan Veer and ran it up the gut relentlessly, eking out a 13-11 win and closing the door on a 24 game win streak. Matt Larson was the running backs name if I’m not mistaken.

This one's easy. JCA & Carmel Catholic. Carmelites need to stick together.
I like Minooka (maybe still a homer team for me) and I like to see Coal City do good as long as they arn't playing us.
Over the decades (even before Frank Lenti), I have attended the most Mt. C. games as a neutral observer free of skin in the game. At Gately, the urban cityscape is in full view. On the field, the decorum of the players, fans and coaches has been sportsmanlike, including much mistake-free football. The execution and schemes were among the best you could witness in all 3 game phases. The chance might exist that you might even be seeing athletes who could be playing on Saturdays or even Sundays down the line. It remains to be seen if the same will be the case going forward.
How did Hayden Fox ever get a college job after calling that running play in the mud and rain that led to the Walnut Heights winning score?
