We have these things called airplanes now. They deliver fresh products all over the world. Pretty neat.

Forgot about Winchell's. Great breakfast.
If you've been to places where seafood was pulled out of the water hours before you eat it then you would understand where the guy is coming from.

Nothing beats Coastal Fresh casual seafood, but the ambience and mood (on vacation, for most of us) has a lot to do with that.

Bluffalo Slim needs to learn Bluefin, UPS, etc. You can get seafood that was in the water "a few hours ago" in pretty much any great city including Louisville thanks to our UPS hub.

You really think Eric Ripert is whipping up frozen or 1-2 day old seafood at Le Bernardin? [eyeroll]

Lol. Most of those seafood shacks in coastal towns aren't selling any fresher items than top notch seafood joints in major cities. TMFS. They're selling from the same companies that are quick shipping the prime meat to the big boys. Money dictates, doggy.

Learn life and I'll work on traveling more.

It is sad but true. You really have to ask where they get their seafood. Many, if not most places in the panhandle all get their oysters from Louisiana.

Case in point, I drove to Boss oyster in Apalachicola to get some of the good stuff. Found out from some locals they import theirs, but I was able to find a local spot with the fresh ones. And it was night and day.

Yup. Just watch Gordon Ramsey a few times and you'll see where those places get their food. If you're buying fried shrimp po'boys its coming from GFS or Sysco in most cases.

Second the Blue Door rec. Not for dinner. They'll be sold out and closed by mid-afternoon.

I haven't had Tony's, yet. For steak, Blue Heron is pretty outstanding.

For comfort food, Winchell's and AP Suggins are solid and inexpensive. AP Suggins has the best side salad in town.

Saul Good is also quite solid. Surprisingly excellent burger there.

Who said destin dan is better. I mean coastal cities with a pulse. NYC is a coast city

Seattle, LA, Miami, NYC, Boston, come to mind (been to all but Boston).

My initial response was about there not being good crab cakes in mid western cities. Which I agree with. Of course you can pay quite a bit more than you normally would for a decent crab cake.

I have had fantastic seafood in Vegas.

Does boss really import their oysters with people harvesting them 30 feet away?

There was a place that we watched them haul them in and start shucking across the bay in east point. Think it was called captain snooks. I bet they also sell them local harvest from eddie teachs on st george.

I've had fresh seafood all over US. Low country seafood. Gulf seafood. New england seafood. Pacific NW seafood. Can't remember quite a plate like the orgasm in your mouth that the crab cakes and ahi at tonys is.

It would be really hard for a Mid-West restaurant to beat a crab cake from Baltimore/DC area.
Most of them are small , minced looking patties compared to what you get on the coast, like Old Ebbitt Grill.
Even having them all them off the boat, streamed and tossed in a brown bag with Old Bay season is the bomb.

-I've had Old Ebbitt, good stuff, and the charm of the place is even better. However, I've had much better crab cakes elsewhere.

-You also have to remember all these fish are seasonal. So where does the crab come from during the winter?

I just can't see a good crab cake being made in the Mid-West.
Terrible take. Louisville is one of the top fresh seafood distribution cities in the US these days thanks to UPS. The seafood on cities like Vegas, Chicago, Louisville, and St Louis is as fresh as any coastal city restaurant that doesn't own their own boats.

On page 2 and I don't think anyone has mentioned Malone's. Did it close or something?

My personal favorite is AP Suggins. Just great Kentucky comfort food!

Malone didn't close, it just went to ****. They are making plenty of money selling mediocre pub food at Drakes though so don't feel sorry for them.

Suggins is solid at what they do, I've always been a big fan.

Suggins does old school family fried food as good as anyone. Never going to be on the list of best in town but I always enjoy. That salad. Yum.

For Breakfast, Winchell's sausage gravy is awesome. for lunch, their chicken livers and greens are the best I've had. Lots of TV's to catch whatever games are on at the time.

I like Ramsey's breakfast too.

Lexington not having a legit Italian restaurant (or three) has always been weird to me.
