I tried to keep up with how our opponents fared this season. Gives me a feeling of the quality of opponent we put on the schedule. Take this however you will.

Arizona State (Loss) - 10-2
Toledo (Loss) - 7-5
Florida (Loss) - 7-5
Texas (Loss) - 11-1
Georgia (Loss) - 10-2
Texas A&M (Loss) - 8-4
Arkansas (Loss) - 6-6
UMass (Win) - 2-10
Tennessee (Loss) - 10-2
Missouri (Loss) - 9-3
Ole Miss (Loss) - 9-3


So out of 12 games, 11 of our opponents had winning seasons with three of those games coming against opponents ranked in the top 7 (at the time), and another 3 against opponents in the top 20 (at the time).

Not trying to create any excuses, but our competition wasn't shabby.

still cant believe with that amazing portal pull that arkansas had.. they only managed to go 6-6. Thought for sure they had ole miss and mizzou games in the bag for easy wins.

This only shows that we need to schedule more like Ole Miss. LOL!

While playing potentially 4 Playoff teams ALL on the road is brutal, there is still no excuse for losing to Toledo and getting our doors blown off by a mid-level Arkansas team, both at home.

ETA: The Florida team that beat us at home was playing nothing like they were late in the season.

Agree, no excuses but turns out our schedule was as anticipated. Also turns out Skattebo was no RAT.

Last I saw, we had the 2nd toughest schedule in the nation. Michigan had the toughest.

It feels like portal has just replaced regular recruiting cycle star tracking. Stars don't always pan out. Even stars require good coaching. Getting wrapped around the axle over signing day has long been a fool's errand. I think that eventually we will see the portal in a similar vein. It's great to get highly rated/thought of players, but it's way better to know you have the coaching to get the most out of whatever you have.

Caveat: The portal SHOULD provide a better read on the actual college abilities of upperclassmen who enter, ASSUMING that they've played meaningful snaps and aren't in the portal because they can't make the 2-deep.

It really wasn't the win loss record that has everybody so down. The only inexcusable loss was Toledo. But not being competitive in so many games is just damning for the staff.

Arkansas's margin of victory over us was greater than the number of points they scored in all but two other games. They somehow outdid Peter Sirmon's prior standard for defensive incompetence.

This may have been the strongest schedule we have ever played. But with this team, it wouldn’t have mattered. 3-4 wins would have been the ceiling even with the easiest schedule we’ve played since SEC went to 8 conference games.

Purdue's schedule says hold my beer. Their schedule might end up with 5 teams in the playoff.

Even giving them leeway for the schedule, I read somewhere that if they were spotted 34 points in every game, they would have finished 6-6. It's no surprise their coach got fired.
