While this summarizes the way bids seemingly are being handled now with this overinflated tournament, I wonder why this train of thought came to be.
Many teams in prior years (in 2 and 4 team formats) lost their pre-CCG “included” positioning by losing their respective CCG. It made sense as it was another real life data point of the result of a game that occurred.
In addition, the playing of the CCG mattered this year in the ACC as the only reason Miami is in the Playoff at all is the result of the playing of the CCG (i.e., UVa was punished for having to play a CCG - UVa goes to the Playoff as the ACC Champion and one of the 5 highest ranked Conference Champions without an ACC CCG.). So saying CCG results don't matter is provably false. In addition, 15 of the 16 losers of P4 CCGs which were ranked in the CFP Penultimate Poll prior to the CCG over last 4 years (including this year) were punished by the CFP Ranking Committee in the Final CFP Poll via falling in the rankings (and this included many extremely close losses) - the lone exception was this year's Alabama team, who absurdly, and hypocritically, was not dropped even a single position despite being utterly embarrased by UGa (Alabama only scored 7 points - they had negative 3 yards rushing for the game and a paltry 200 yards of Total Offense - in prior years, Ranked P4 losers of CCGs were dropped many spots for this type of embarrassing performance). The CFP inconsistently, hypocritically and corruptly not dropping Alabama for such a performance absolutely MATTERED as ND should have moved in front of Alabama after that performance (and would have in any other year except this year), but rather than do what they did every other year with the ranked P4 loser, they doubled-down on their inconsistent hypocrisy and dropped ND who didn't even freaking play two spots to #11 (which was actually 3 as Alabama was moved directly in front of them after barely beating a hapless Auburn team with no coach the prior week and ND was busy utterly curb-stompping Stanford... then they didn't punish Alabama for losing, and looking horrendous, in their CCG loss as the CFP did to every prior year CFP-ranked P4 loser). Saying that CCG results don't matter, and have never mattered to the CFP Ranking Committee (i.e., they're ignored by the Committee), relative to the CFP Final Rankings which determine the Playoffs, is a provably false, bankrupt, WRONG and utterly bs claim.
