Sure, with postseason wins. Has he lost fewer than 2 regular season games at Penn State?

I admire you splitting hairs, but by Penn State’s 70s and 80s and early 90s standards, 2 regular season losses sucks.
I admire you moving the goalposts, but the fact is that we haven't won a Natty in nearly 40 years, nor even been seriously in the hunt for 30.

They also play more regular season games than we used to (12 vs 11), so easier to get 11 wins when you’re playing 13 games a year total.

My point was that older fans (having lived through the 70s to 90s era) expected better results. They are older and mellower now. Those expectations have waned and the younger generation is fine with 10-2 regular seasons. I was a kid in the 80s, but one loss and the season was wasted and fans were depressed.

My point that people blaming Franklin for the state of our program ignore the fact that we haven't been all that for a very long time. The blame for that has to rest with more than Franklin.

I think most posters do recognize this. The “Grading Franklin” thread had higher grades than I had expected, especially from those who one might consider to be anti-Franklin, going by their posts. We’re all frustrated, nobody’s satisfied.

I give him a solid B. Took over with sanctions and has led the program to nice finishes and record. Has missed on several large things, the portal and hiring good assistant coaches. Hiring of assistant coaches is some good and some not so.... Comes down to what everyone wants. 10-2 doing things the "Joe" way with emphasis on academics and good off field behavior or push the limits for Titles. My only qualm is that PSU is paying JF a lot of money. At that rate if I was PSU I would expect a better ROI. More Big 10 Championships and some appearances in the playoffs.
Well said.

Why do people dismiss 2005 and 2008. 11-1 regular season both years. Big champs. Lost both games by a last second play.

2005 12-1 and current 10 years haven’t been close to that.

Bullshite......
You can't say we weren't in the hunt in 2005 and 2008.
And we were in the hunt in 2016, unless wondering right up until the selection show if we made the CFP isn’t "in the hunt".

So how much longer will it take to elevate the program, or is it never? And if never is the answer, why throw all the money at it?

In regards to this, I prefer winning percentage as a metric when comparing between eras as opposed to just counting wins. It does a better job of accounting for the number of games.

I don’t only blame Franklin. I just think that better in-game coaching would have yielded a CFP berth or two between 2016 and 2023.

I believe there would have been a few wins over OSU and Michigan too. That would dramatically alter perspectives on the state of the program.

Finished 3rd, 8th, and 7th in the three years you mentioned- your definition of in the hunt is pretty loose

I don't know, when or if it will get better and I wouldn't spend a lot of money on the stadium anyway. I don't expect "college" football to survive long term anyway.

If it survives it will be in a different form and there will greater calls on cash. For that, and other reasons, spending $700mm on a stadium may not be prudent.
