Big difference resigning then being fired. Steelers still own his coaching rights for two more years

maybe maybe not depends on how his stepping aside was handled. They could have easily said, listen step aside, so we dont have to go thru the embarrassment of firing a coach, but we will still pay out your contract, and you are free to coach.

Change the thread Name.

Coach T. Classy Coach previously employed by a Classy Organization in a Classy City.

We are going to miss him.
Classy coach, a good man, won a Super Bowl, did nothing to besmirch his good name, or the Steelers organization, or the city of Pittsburgh. It was time for him to go but I have a world of respect for him.

Rooney needs to remember, "It's better to be a living dog, than a dead lion". The fans were sick of Tomlin's nonsense.

Let's hope Rooney isn't an idiot with the replacement.

There's an argument that the Steelers gig is the best in all of football. Ownership, tradition, fanbase, job security, etc. They'll have their pick of the litter, although they seem to find guys from off the beaten path.

I've been saying this since Indiana trounced Bama - Cignetti should end up on some of these NFL boards.

I don’t understand all the Tomlin hate. Maybe it ran its course - but I’m jealous of a team that has had 3 coaches in 55 years. Pittsburgh is a destination for players because of the stable and winning culture. Be careful with it.

I suspect that most of the hate is due to people thinking three, four years ago what came to realization today, that it was time for him to go. Rodgers at QB was never going to work, the only reason the Steelers made the playoffs was because Baltimore didn’t make the plays they needed to. Really a freak season Baltimore had.

And it would be wise to go hard after John Harbaugh to take advantage of how lucky we were that Baltimore had the flukey bad season.

It wasn’t a freak season for the Ratbirds. It was a trend. That’s why Harbaugh is gone. He and Lamar routinely underachieved.

Johnny H would be a good fit for the Steelers. The Baltimore/Pittsburgh games are already epic, and now Johnny’s coaching the other team? That’s Gold, Jerry, Gold.

It's not truly hate...it was just time to move on years ago and the Rooneys refused. You can't lose 7 straight playoff games with most being blowouts and keep your job. Most coaches can't go 3 seasons let alone a decade...which he had a future HOF coach for most of that.

Tomlin will go on to have a great TV career (maybe he'll finally say something relevant) or follow Andy and have success elsewhere but mediocrity isn't acceptable. I understand other fan bases see it as "at least you winning" but making the playoffs doesn't matter when you have zero success. Just gives you a later pick.

Regardless this is best for Tomlin and the Steelers.

Johnny is going somewhere he thinks has a QB that can win now. Atlanta has everything but a QB so maybe an option.

The Steelers traditionally go after a young up and coming coordinator or assistant (Cowher, Tomlin). Harbaugh is not that.
I looked it up so you don’t have to: John Harbaugh will become 64 years old this year.

I think Tomlin was a good coach not a great one. Look at the first 4 years of his tenure compared to the remaining15. He inherited Cowhers players and coaching staffs for the most part. Once players and coaches start turning over it’s not as impressive, IMHO.
