I'll make a wild prediction...

Our fans will treat this as much less of a deal than it is, and/or rationalize it (though if it happened at Ohio State, Michigan, or Pitt, it would be a sign of their terrible culture).

Other fans will treat it as a huge deal (though if it happened at their school, they'd have no issue rationalizing it).

"This is a chance for me to do what I do best, which is to get after the quarterback, play fast, and not have to think. Just do what I do best and get paid."

Looks like he stopped thinking a little early

Towing Fees just went up in State College in 2022 too. A**holes.

The State College Police Department worked with the towing companies to determine the recommended fees, Gardner said in December.

The changes include:

• Non-crash towing increases from $175 to $225

• Crash towing increases from $300 to $375

• Fee for tows requiring use of a dolly increases from $20 to $50

• Drop fee increases from $100 to $150

• Storage fee after 24 hours increases from $45 to $60 per day

• Protection fee for vehicles with open convertible top or open windows increases from $40 to $60

• Drive shaft removal only increases from $60 to $75. (Removal and reinstallation remains the same at $90).

The ordinance also sets a fuel schedule for tows of more than 5 miles ranging from $6 to $7.50, based on the towing company’s current fuel costs.

F*ck tow truck companies in State College. They're worse than Payday Loan places; completely predatory. This driver also threatened Carter with a metal bar. If this were Georgia or Bama, who knows how it would have ended.....
I was going to say something also, but I knew I would get crushed for saying it. You are right. Those a holes have been preying on students for years. They had a reputation when I was there in the 90’s. I see things haven’t changed.

Carter shouldn't have touched the guy, but this whole town is one big cookie jar with everyone's hands in the pot. Tow truck companies are the worst, and they're enabled by the borough council and apartment building owners. There is jack sh*t for parking in SC. Any jury would sympathize with Carter here - it's pure theft (after midnight? Come the f*ck on....); this clown was trolling apartments for vehicles to tow.

So Carter tried to pay the drop fee and was refused? I’m not condoning what he did, but towing is a very dirty business, especially in State College. It was really bad in the 80s when I was there. If it were me, I would have given Carter a break and told him to move his car. I think some people go looking for trouble with PSU football players.

The fact that one of the worst is named Walk's Towing is like a complete troll job.

Bingo. There’s subset of the population in State College that resent the university and specifically the football team. I’m not saying Carter was targeted but these shady towing companies do target students in general.

Well this town is like any other town or city when it comes to parking fines or towing. I think it sucks that you have to pay for parking after 6 now downtown but any city or town even Myrtle now is 5 bucks for beach parking per hour!! If premium Lot, better location it is more! If you are parked longer and it is expired after a while you get towed!

Is that fair because he is a football player. Would the tow truck driver do the same or act the same if it was you or me?

Walks towed me once and it was a pain in the *** and I like zero degrees outside. But I learned and have never had a car towed in 40 years.

Yeah, I'm okay with fines. Not with being towed; it's archaic and as well noted/documented, a very sleazy/dirty business. Especially in a college town with zero parking.

Here's my towing story in state college. It's 1980 or 1981. My car gets towed from the apartment I was moving into the day of move-in. I was parked in a permitted spot without a permit for about an hour. Well, since I didn't have a parking place secured yet I thought "no problem", I don't need the car right now so I'll get it when I need it. Clearly, I wasn't aware of storage fees. Well, around 8 weeks later I needed my car and found out that I owed nearly $800 to get it back. So, I did what any desperate college student would do in that position and took possession of my vehicle.

Well, about 3 - 4 weeks later my phone rings and a state college police officer is on the phone trying to get me to tell him I took the car from the lot. I knew he was up to no good so I played dumb and at the end of the call he said he'd be charging with Theft of Services.

So, about 4 weeks later I'm in court and I brought a local attorney who was going to cost me about $50. He asked me if I had damaged anything or if anyone had seen me retrieving the car. I hadn't damaged anything and wasn't seen as it was after midnight and very dark. We listened to the police officer state the charges and his evidence and anything he thought would help the case. When the officer finished, my attorney stood up and said the "Your Honor the State has no case". With that, the judge said, "you're right, would the defendant care to offer some amount to help defray costs?"

My attorney took me into the hallway and suggested I offer something so the judge doesn't get mad, give a guilty verdict, and make me appeal. He assured me we'd win at appeal but it would take a lot of time and money. So, I told him to offer the $35 towing fee but no storage fees since I was not notified in any way about those expenses.

My attorney offered the $35 and the tow truck owner said "I don't understand we (meaning him and the officer) always win when we come to court". The judge asked him "do you want the $35" and the dope said no. The judge immediately said case Dismissed.

Total time including signing in, waiting, court, was about 15 minutes. We got outside and my attorney told me "no charge" since he it went so fast.

Carter shouldn’t have illegally parked.

Exactly right, as evidenced by the responses above.

I'll bet the drivers work on commission.

No matter the circumstances, Carter, with so much on the line, both for himself and the team, should have used better judgment.
Yes. However, if you read the accounts of it. Carter told the guy he was calling 911 to make sure it was legit and at that point the guy threatened him with a metal bar. The driver isn’t completely innocent here. If he was just doing his job, let Carter make that call and let the police sort it out.

If Carter did call 911, I hope he is charged with abusing the 911 system much like those who call 911 when McDonalds gives them the wrong dipping sause.

Our guy is the bad guy in this. From the story, he had multiple opportunities to not escalate things, and he chose wrong multiple times.

Carter should have walked away. Discretion is a virtue in matters like this.
