So happy Wawa is pounding south Florida with new stores. Have a Wawa in my little beach town now of Delray Beach. Place is jammed all the time 24/7. Treat their employees really well. Talking to the employees you get company stock, bonuses, they reimburse you money for college. Why they have so many people working for them and workers who stay there for a long time. Funny story... my friend works for Wawa at corporate. Every now and then he has to go out and manage a store while they train or hire a new manager. He noticed these people who had been there for decades, started working in high school and never left. He asked them do you get tired of making sandwiches, and stocking shelves and want to do something else? Their response was I have $1.5 million in company stock I can cash out whenever I want. I am retiring to Florida within a year a two and will still probably work at a Wawa in Florida... He was amazed how these people had saved up so much money and were smart about it.
The south Florida Wawa's I'm familiar with are Great Places to meet homeless people and drug addicts. Having financial conversations at the gas pump is always a big turn on for me.

Sounds like every place I’ve been in Florida.
Then you are visiting the ghetto's since I live in Delray Beach, FL everyone I have been to over the last several years is clean and no loitering. Police hangout at most of them for the free coffee and food.

The are building a new one in Exton about 1/2 mile from my House even though there are 2 others a few miles away. Hey good for me when I want a shorty fast or gas but bad the rest of the time for traffic in the area which sucks already.

A lot of convenience retailers are trying to capture market share in the Southeastern US. It’s also interesting that Wawa is probing the Midwest.

To be fair, the Wawa locations in WPB are all ghetto. My Wawa exec friend says we'll never see a Wawa in Jupiter because of the cost of real estate.

Just picked up a nice breakfast sandwich at Atlantic and 441 in Delray. Place was full and rocking. Coffee is excellent as well.

My job had me on the road for many years. I have probably been in half of the convenience stores in PA one time or another.

Turkey Hill Stores and the Turkey Hill Ice Cream have been owned and operated separately for many years. The Lancaster owners sold them off decades ago. Both have been declining for years. The ice cream is average at best. Most of the convenience stores are old, dirty, and operating past their useful lives.

Sheetz has morphed into fast food restaurants with convenience stores and gas. They seem to be the best run outfit in their industry.

WaWa used to be my go to for a good sub. No longer. Their quality has dropped off significantly and they would do well to close many of their older stores. They seem to be chasing Sheetz.

Rutters is a step below both of the above.

Royal Farms does a nice job. Their chicken is very good, large pieces well breaded. I would say their chicken is the best convenience store food item now being sold.

One thing I have noticed is that bread is being dropped by the stores. Of course bread and milk were the two items I used to pick up whenever I was headed home.

I will see if my friend can take a look at the big board at corporate. They have pins with properties they have agreement to buy or negotiating with as well as where they would like a store. See if Jupiter area has any pins on it.

I grew up in Altoona, HQ for Sheetz. I patronized the first and original Sheetz store. I lived in Downingtown for 13 years and patronized the Wawa down the street from me during that time. And now I live in Georgia and have become familiar with Quiktrip. Hands down, QT is so much better than Sheetz and Wawa IMHO.

Buc-ees is great but the locations are limited to the interstates. I don't view them as competitors of Sheetz, Wawa and Quiktrip.
+1. But I was in one for the first time when visiting family in Dallas and was just blown away by them.
The Jerkey Aisle alone was amazing.
Also the BBQ is pretty darn good.

In addition, there really isn't anything "convenient" about Buc-ees. It's an experience for sure, but in and out time for a quart of milk or something will never compare to real convenience stores.

All of this depresses me. Those of you that are 50 and older may remember “mini Marts” and auto supply and z auto shack in the 70’s and 80’s in state college and towns around sc. my dad had 13 mini Marts. We crushed mr sheetz lol. My dad was full time professor at psu in emech as well as running all of these business. Unfortunately the kids, 4 of us, were too young to help or more than work that kids do to help out. In the 80’s he started leasing out to Henry sahakian and unimarts. When we see today what sheetz and Wawa have become it just kills us. My dad was way ahead of his time. Imagine working all those businesses and full time professor. Wow.

That sucks Raz. Was the "Mini Mart" logo blue and white? I think I remember it. Uni-Mart was a good brand name imo that could have grown to regional status at least.

I went into a Sheetz in WV Saturday during my daughter’s track meet. I opened the door to walk in and a guy rode his bike into the store. I followed him in and he asked me for some money. I told him I don’t carry cash. Then he asked me if I would buy him something. I just said no. Very odd interaction.

On a related note, I had a standing argument with my son who is a '21 PSU grad as to if Sheetz was more of a restaurant or a gas station. I said gas station. He said restaurant.

On one of our trips taking him back to State College, he smugly pointed to a highway sign that listed "Food Next Exit ... Sheetz".

I hate him.
Stan Sheetz says they are a restaurant trapped inside a gas station.

I’m guessing he wasn’t looking to buy a toothbrush?

Being that it happened in West Virginia, what did you find odd about it?

True, but you have to wonder if Buc-ees expands to take on the true “convenient” stores or if the others expand to take on the “Truck Stops.”

The first Buc-ees is coming to AZ and will be in the far west Phoenix suburb of Goodyear. 120 fuel stations and 75,000sf store.

They’re purposely built along major freeways in rural and semi-rural areas for a reason.

WaWa opened a drive-thru west of Allentown. No gas, limited offerings, no restrooms, supposedly cannot walk in. I pass it often. No lines. Doesn’t seem to be a winner.

A Ragin Cajun chicken place is opening soon next door and a very popular, recently remodeled Chick-fil-A across the street. WaWa is very smart about their placements, but this one seems doomed!

Been in several Buc-ees. WOW! Food was good and it’s awesome. Only possible downer is it’s “too” big and busy!
