For the oldsters among us, this is a pivotal date in the history of popular music. It was the date that The Beatles first appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show." It's impossible to explain how profoundly they changed popular culture in general and popular music specifically. From that point forward, rock and roll was not just the music we listened to, it was the music we lived. I saw The Beatles only two years later at Crosley Field as they neared the end of an increasingly unsatisfying performance career. In just a couple of years, they evolved from being a pop phenomenon to be important, influential musicians who could only express themselves in the studio. They were amazing.
