Of course some people think beating a 2 win OM team this year gave them the state championship and of course that isn't delusional.
Calling it a championship is kind of cheesy, but in order for MSU to have consistent success, it has to be the premier football program in Mississippi. As bad as Ole Miss is, beating Ole Miss is what's necessary for MSU to be recognized as the premier program.
Even though Southern Miss undoubtedly does a good job with its football program (probably fair to say its been run better than State or Ole Miss over the years), it really doesn't matter. If USM runs the table in the CUSA one year, that could change, but otherwise, the reality is that the difference between the SEC and CUSA is growing and as long as MSU consistently goes to bowls while playing in the SEC, USM is not relevant to what MSU needs to do.
