Week 1 is over, and there were lots of upsets in Edgy World.......not the one I picked, but still lots of upsets. For my pick this week we'll be going out to the northwestern suburbs for what should be a great game. My upset for this week is....... the unranked and 0-1 Corsairs of Carmel Catholic over the highly touted #8 ranked Wildcats of Phillips. Any time a city team has to make the long trip up to Mundelien it's going to be a tough night. What will make things even tougher is what's waiting for the Wildcats......The #1 ranked tight end (I think he's more of a wideout) in the State of Illinois, Noah Turner. Turner and the Corsairs lost to the #4 ranked team in Wisconsin last week, but they had to make the long trip north for the game. I'm not sold on Phillips, and this weeks game will tell you why. Final score in this one.......Carmel 28 - Phillips 26. That's my upset. What are your thoughts, and who is your upset?

P.S. Gately dogs tonight.........Can't wait !!!!!!!!

Just not sure how well Carmel's defense can match up against the speed from Phillips. Philips also uses this game to give it's defense a chance to experience playing against the Carmel's veer offense, something they will definitely see in 4A. It's one of those match ups where it might take Carmel 7-9-15 plays to score and then take Phillips one big play to answer....

I'm gonna go with Joliet Central over Rich South. The Steelmen almost beat the Stars last year and boy are they due. I would love to see Coach Boyter get a win.

A hot Friday night on the east side of Joliet. What could possibly go wrong? For Rich South, maybe very much. Just guessing that Rich South becomes the next victim to be mugged on the east side of town. I look for Coach Boyter to be carried like Augustus Caesar from the football field, over the Cass street bridge, and through the west side of town.

I said Central last week and they were close.

My feetos Friday upset will be the haters. They're going to be upset and mad at the new hats.

Phillips came ready to play and CoM was overmatched from the start. Phillips is arun based offense and if you can stop the qb from being a RB your team should have success. Impressed with Phillips D line and mlb Amani jones play as they created havoc all night. CoM's O line was overmatched and their Defense looked lost most of the night. Going to be tough to dig out from an 0-3 and don't see them making the playoffs

I expected Carmel to lose but at least put up a fight. They will have to win out after losing next week to JCA.

Oddy,

Agree they looked lost - phillips is one of the most physical teams I've seen in awhile. No doubt on a mission to get back to game 14

. IMO its time to change it up in Mundelein as CoM while still an outstanding school is not drawing football players like they did with their run in the early 2000's. LZ, The Ville, Stevie even Warren have taken players away. Riley Lee's being the biggest name with a Carmel connection who opted not to attend

Yea, there is plenty of talent around, just not attending Carmel. And I can understand not wanting to pay tuition when you can go to L'ville, LZ, Stevenson etc. for "nothing".

While losing players to the NSC power schools, the lack of success at Mundelein HS has always helped CoM. This years starters from Mundelein include D1 guys, T, sean foster and TE, noah turner, FB rondell jamison and at least 5 or 6 other starters. Take those 9-10 guys out of the lineup and CoM would struggle big time.

Not exactly "nothing". Property taxes pay for public schools.

For instance, my property tax bill says I pay $2,000 per year that goes towards the public high school in my area. I pay no matter if I have kids in the public high school or not.

I figure I will likely be paying property taxes during 50 years of my life which would be $100,000 total in property taxes paid and that's if property taxes never go up (which they always go up especially in a state that is bankrupt).

I could put 2 kids through private school high school for $80,000.

I just wanted to point out that "free" tuition does not exist whether you attend public or private school.

That is another great scheduling win for Phillips. They have the speed to own option teams.

Yea, I know, believe me I know, that's why I put "nothing" in quotes.

Guarantee that's the reason. Who wants drop $10K a year (at least) on a high education these days. That's $40K you can put towards college or retirement. No way I'm sending my kids to catholic schools.

Me! And I fully believe it is well worth the investment for all five of my kids. In addition, I know many people who feel the same way.

Same here x 4. So my cars are a little older and not quite so fancy but there is more to like than that and Catholic education is about more than just math and english (which they do teach well)

Where to send your kids is a family decision made for a variety of reasons.

I do believe that all the "Publics" should give a great big "THANK YOU" to the "Privates". What would the school situation look like if you threw another 40,000+ students into the mix without $1.00 more in tax revenue?

Also depends on what kind of public school district you would attend. If my kid is going to a D203 or D204 school do they need to really need to go to Benet/St.Francis/Marmion/Rosary to get that better of an education? little different situation in other parts of the state that don't have that quality of a public school district.

However, as TeeOH stated, many feel that a Catholic Education is much more than what is learned out of your English and Math books.

I have had one private and one public. Both were successful and the proper decision. Neither decision had anything to do with athletics.

Well I didn't mean to start a debate on the value of private education, only to touch on Carmel's challenge of getting kids from L'ville, LZ etc.. My daughter went to Woodlands Acad., my oldest son went to L'ville and the two youngest boys went to Carmel. I am not sorry I paid the tuition at all

I agree that the value is there in many districts in Illinois. I have said on many occasions that we couldn't possibly made a mistake educationally with the decision of where our kids went to high school. It simply came down to which school was the best fit for them. Our kids looked at several privates along with our local public school. All are excellent schools. I love a decision I can't F@#% Up.
