Welcome back everyone..........High school football returns. I'm looking forward to a great season filled with exciting upsets. Let get started . This year I'm going to start off with a big bang. This weeks upset is .... The #6 ranked Hilltoppers (Hitters) of Glenbard West over the top ranked and defending 8a State Champion Hawks of Maine South. The Hawks have a history of starting off slow. That's what happens when your team relies so much on the offense. The Hitter defense is always tops in the State, and this year will be no different. The determining factor this week will be the GW offense, which is loaded with scorers (Diver, Thomas & Pierce) I'll take the Hitters tomorrow afternoon. Final score Glenbard West 28 - Maine South 24. That's this weeks upset. What are your thoughts, and who is your upset?

I don't see Rice winning. I think it'll be Marist 21 - 10. Not much offense on the Rice side.

Tough to call games upsets in Week 1, since it's mainly based on preseason polls.

Yes....by Edgy's poll this is the narrowest of upsets, but I'll take:

Batavia over Lemont

JT Central over Plainfield. I am a big fan of what Coach Boyter is doing and always route for the Steelmen! Central played PFE tough last year and I think they win their opener for the first time in a long time.

I'll second. Not sold on Maine South based on last year. I think they'll return to what they've been most of this decade; a good team but not a title contender.

CN100 replayed the West Aurora-Maine South game last night, and West Aurora should have won that game, refs blew a clear TD on the play before WA fumbled, and Maine South should have ended up 6-4. If they don't have the 300+ lb guy on the d-line to close up opponents running games, and they don't have that scrambling QB playing "backyard football" they don't win 8A. Neither of those guys are back this year. GBW on the other hand, sounds like they might have a really good offense to go with their always stellar defense...which frankly just sounds unfair..and scary. I say GBW by two TDs

I don't think this will happen Bones. Wasn't overly impressed with the lower levels at Sandburg last year (saw them in person). Sandburg coaches do get the most out of their players, though.

If Loyola loses, should they drop in rankings considering they will have at least 7 starters out and multiple sophs. playing for the first time in years?

You may be right. We did lose a lot and preseason rankings mean nothing. But I still like our chances. The game could come down to kicking and that scares me.

It's nice to see you still have your hard on for MS. Your bitterness is pretty sad. I'm surprised you didn't mention the supposed open boundary or the Palatine(and Barrington) QB being injured last year.

Yes.Especially if you lose to a school below you in the rankings. Only time you might stay the same or not drop is if you lose a close game to a school ranked above you.

Fair enough..I am a born and raised Park Ridge Maine East grad and a Palatine football fan, and I will never like Maine South.

That said, the reality is, one or two people who, admittedly, stand out like that can make all the difference in a high school team. Those guys did but they're gone now.

I saw Inserra says this year's QB is pretty much a pocket passer, and when you've had guys like that (Collis, Alviti) they haven't been as successful. You've got a new QB and a lot of new O-lineman against Glenbard West's defense. Regardless of if you had Jarvis and Butz on the line and Benz or Price at QB that's a daunting task.

Ok makes sense. I agree that our QB will have to run to be effective. He will have a ton of targets though so if he is given time the skys the limit.
FYI Alviti was a State Champion.

As a sophomore. Junior and senior year not as successful. That said, again I've give credit where credit is due..Alvita is at NU and Collis is at U of C..Gotta have a lot on the ball besides just football to go to those institutions.

Pat's over Rita's. I don't think Pat's will be a playoff team, but from what I gather, the new coach from California is big on defense and ball control. Quite opposite of Pat's the previous 5 or so years. If Pat's can play a clean game, Rita's will be in a hard battle for the W

There you go feeto. I think the scoring will be a bit higher at say 35-27. If the MS passer sits in the pocket too often, he will have a long day. GW swarms pocket passers with blitzes from every angle. Bryant experienced some success in the pocket last year, but the GW was in shock as their best pressure LB dislocated his elbow in the first half. That was one play after losing our RB for the year. Offense failed to maintain any time of possession so Bryant had the time to work some magic.

I see GW possessing the ball more this year as they have significant depth at the skills. Many guys ready to carry the ball and new QB Hollensbe will exploit MS if they overplay the run. The Freek will get his yards and break a few crazy TDs, but GW will own time of possession in the 2nd half.

Pat's V Rita should be a great game. I too like Pat's in this one.

The Chicago Tribune has St. Rita rated as a top 20 team. The Chicago Sun-Times lists both the starting QB (Jake Zylman, St. Rita, Sr., QB (5-10, 180)) and RB ( Chris Childers, St. Rita, Sr., RB (5-11, 190)) in the area’s top ten for their positions. SR has a number of quality receivers back also. Kicking duties will be handled by Junior Gavin Mottl. I do not think SR will have problems scoring. I saw Zylman catch the State Baseball Championship game this summer. I sat directly behind home base and his physical development over the last year is impressive.

My concern is the defense. Last year SR gave up way too many points. And that was with Sean Coghlan the Catholic Blue Division Defensive player of the year on the team. It seems like no one else could tackle which might be a by-product of fewer full contact days.

SR will go as far as their defense takes them. Last year SR put a completely new offense in. Maybe this year a new pass defense is in order. But if St. Pat's comes out running the ball most of the game I like St. Rita.

St. Rita 24 St. Pats 17

And then some.

Your comments about MS only being effective when the QB can run aren't accurate. Price couldn't run a lick. Then you gave an example of Alviti as a pure pocket passer. One of Matt's greatest strengths was his running ability.

I understand your dislike of Maine South. In town rivalries feed that sort of thing. But at least be accurate in your criticism.

Good luck to the Pirates this year. I have always admired that program.

Those of you who now wish to say GW was overrated will be proven incorrect. GW will bounce back. They seemingly always do. Great progarm, proud tradition.

I always stand up to face my words. I believed we would score 35 points and possibly more in an earlier thread. I stated in multiple threads prior to this that MS might score as many as 45 points because GW had to replace so many tacklers from last year.

What you have a tough time learning in practice or film is strength of will. I learned a lot about GW defense Saturday when they were outwilled all over the field. That is the metric I overestimated from my prediction.

You on the other hand lack the will to avoid looking like that little needle dick that can't wait to **** all over everyone having a crappy day. Congrats

Yep, and I may be eating my own words next week! Point is your smugness over the past few years has been ridiculous. Good luck the rest of the way and lighten up Francis.
