It's playoff time, and that's a tough time to call for an upset. The question this time of year is always "What's an upset"? Do we go by playoff seedings ? We all know that's not a true barometer. Do we go by regular season records????? No again. I like to use a combination of brackets, records, Edgy's top 30, the newspaper rankings, and my gut. Round 1 is always hard because the best teams get the best draw (usually). My pick this week is .......... the 8a #21Huskies of Oak Park River Forest over the # 11 Tigers of Edwardsville. It's going to be a long 6+ hour ride down to Edwardsville for OPRF, and for some reason their playing it tonight. But I love OPRF, and I have all year. I picked them last week to beat the mighty Red Devils of HC. OPRF came up short in that one, but Coach Hoerster's squad never gave up, putting up 12 points in the 4th quarter. Edwardsville has a really good team, but this Huskies defense will be prove to be too much for the Tigers. I like OPRF tonight (again). Final score .........OPRF 21 - Edwardsville 10. That's my upset. What are your thoughts, and who is your upset?

I think this should be a good game. Wouldn't consider it an upset, however. MS has had many deep playoff runs over the years, and is considered one of the top large school programs in the state. West Aurora has their best team since the prohibition era, but their schedule has been weaker than a rum-and-coke in Wrigleyville. We really don't know how good WA is, but we do know that MS has a good (but not great) team this year. The atmosphere in Aurora will be electric. The west side fan base has always represented in football and basketball, but the enthusiasm tonight will be beyond anything you normally see. Despite their record, the Blackhawks will be the team thinking they have something to prove.
I'll take GW and the 3.5 points over NV at NV despite the Saturday night start time.

that's not an "upset" pick. This game is a coin flip (IMO) and one could argue that with all the playoff experience of the kids and the staff at GW and GW getting healthier and NV getting less healthy... that GW could be the slight favorite?

Vegas has NV at -3.5 based on domination of DVC until the GN game which was on the road on a fast track where GN played like their preseason #4 ranking. GN might be the 7A champ if they beat ESL in round 2, so I don't see that NV loss as hurting their status.
GW has their first regular two-loss season since Hetlet's first year at GW. While I may believe GW will win this game, there is no way NV is not "favored" to win this game based on home field advantage.
[EDIT] Massey Score Predictor says NV is 12 point favorite so you have an objective source saying this would be a big upset.

I think HC on the road is a better draw than H-F or LA or Pal on the road. Those other three have a history of 8A success. HC is good, really good. But going on the road for Round 2 at LWE is a lot better than hosting H-F.
Have you started watering Duchon yet to start the mud pit for the HF game? I'm sure you can get a couple dad's from the nearby houses to offer you their hoses.

Lyons Kicker nailed the field goal just barely over the cross bar after one of the north guys jumped off sides for the 10th time of the game to move them 5 yards closer. Otherwise it doesn't have the distance. Wow. Great game and great win by Lyons!!
