Semi final week, wow that was a quick season. I know we all love this time of year, so let's get to it. This weeks upset is........the #20 ranked Hilltoppers of Glenbard West over the #1 ranked Ramblers of Loyola Academy. That's right folks, you heard it here first, #1 is going down. WHY?????? There are a few reasons. #1 ....LA is playing without their QB. What a huge loss at this time of the season. #2 .....LA defense is questionable. Why do I say this? see the MC / BR / and MS games. #3... Duchon. Hardest place in Illinois to play a game. I like GW in this one. Final score Glenbard West 28 - Loyola Academy 21. That's my upset. What are your thoughts, and who is your upset?

I like your pick feeto. The wind may reduce the scoring a bit. I see 21-14. The winner will be the team with the fewest turnovers.

Does GW prepare to defend against a run oriented team or spread offense that distributes the ball 50/50? The Herrion situation makes a difference, right? Or, is the hitters D that good that it doesn't matter?

I hope your wrong Feeto but either way, I don't know if we could've asked for better 8A semi matchups.

GW will prepare for a spread and be ready to defend the run just like with every other team we have played this season, save DGN. Wind will diminish likelihood that either team throws much. Good luck to my LA friends. This has all the makings of a classic battle.

Does anyone think that LA/Holecek might be taking advantage of the opportunity of QB #1's situation and is purposely keeping his availability for the game in question so as to force their opponent to prepare differently?

Hmmm...

Had LA not won it last year and gotten over the hump and GW not lost an 8A semi at home 2 years ago maybe ld think differently. Gotta go with team with best player on field in this one and Gronk.

This isn't exactly the first rodeo for Hetlet. I'm sure he has all avenues covered whether the starter plays or not.

Considering he's won a few of these semi final games I don't think he's paying much attention to it at all.

If his team loses it will be because Loyola beat them not any of the off the field stuff

Half. The thought entered my mind.

Just for the sake of discussion, assume it were true. Would it be scorn worthy?

And one last point, the only reason the NFL forces teams to report injuries is because gambling is a fact there.

I wish the kid the best in his recovery. I saw the hit and would not want my kid playing 7 days after that blow.

No doubt the GW coaches would prepare for any scenario and be ready. They wouldn't be who they are and where they are, otherwise.

I've always wondered, how much time does a defense spend on personell vs formations vs D&D tendencies vs potential matchup concerns. Against some teams I knew exactly what I was going to see and felt really confident that all we had to do was prepare to make the right reads then go out and execute. Other teams, didn't know what to expect until the 1st series. Those teams were not necessarily harder to game plan (because you consider/plan for all that you've seen) but harder to prepare for since the players get less reps against certain looks and have more to think about. In that regard, I always found that to be a disadvantage to the players on the field.

I don't think it's scorn worthy to leave a players availabilty uncertain. It's not the ideal situation to be in. Also why not give the opponent more to think about?

Zero scorn. Any coach worth his beans would never want any injury communicated prior to game time.

EVER

I get that.

What if, for instance, Holecek knew earlier this week, or even today, that QB #1 was unlikely to play but he took advantage of the uncertainty and protocol procedures and allowed it to look like there was a chance he might play -- just to give GBW something extra to think about or to cause them to prepare more one way and less another.

Just part of the game as far as I'm concerned...

BUT let's say the tweet by the player that he was going through the protocol (giving the impression he might play) was encouraged by the coaching staff? Might be approaching a gray area for me - who knows.

That is not a "what if" scenario I find credible. That is exactly what happened and I wouldn't expect anything less from 100% of the coaches that have playoff wins under their belt. Gamesmanship is part of the preparation.

Personnel availability is as sacred as the game planning itself.

That thought occurred to me as well.

It's high school football there is nothing to think about. If the kid doesn't play Loyola doesn't change their offense and they are using a worse kid.

If Herrion is unavailable, don't you think it stands to reason that Marwede will take more snaps than usual?
Which hurts LA. They lose their best WR. Marwede is a great athlete but I would much rather have to worry about him in the backfield than have him jumping ten feet in the air scoring TD's all day at WR.

That assumes that LA has a backup QB who is able to accurately throw him the ball...in the 25 mph winds that are predicted during game time tomorrow.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marwede lines up behind center more often than not tomorrow...even if Herrion is well enough to play. I also anticipate a fair amount of trickery and new looks in the Loyola O tomorrow if Herrion and Boyle are not able to play.

I've been thinking the same exact thing....

No in my opinion - why the heck would it be scorn worthy? He doesn't have to communicate anything about injury status. This ain't the NFL!! Every savvy coach in my opinion would want to keep that info close to the vest and if it's released - have it be late in the week after all game planning and preparations have been completed by the opposing team!! I don't see anything wrong with that at all. Thoughts? do others feel differently?

Defending 8A and 7A champs. Two of the state's most competitive programs over the last eight years. Two of the best coaches in the state. First time ever meeting between the two schools. It doesn't get much better than this.

Safe travels out here tomorrow. Don't let the spartan conditions distract you.

feeto:

I have always considered your Friday Upset Specials comparable to black magic retailed by a used car salesman.

Despite the fact this game puts two superior coaches and teams in competition against one another, under unfavorable conditions and for LA in hostile territory, I remain supremely confident of a Rambler victory.

Should I be wrong with this prediction, I will start a thread tomorrow in which I will offer atonement to any member here who has ever felt wronged by me.

This pledge does not apply to Dean.
