I cannot figure this Montini team out. I will have to sleep on it. I think they have the players there to get the job done but I don't know what's wrong, whether it's the scheme, the will or what??

I can usually break down the problems but there are so many right now, why bother. This team will be very lucky if they make the playoffs this year. I would say right now they have a 30% chance to make the playoffs.

That De LaSalle game might be the difference between 5-4 or 4-5, obviously they are in at 5-4.

That would seem to be the key game, and it's at DLS. The close win over LZ looms very large right now.

I watched the second half of the LZ game and three quarters of tonight's.

My take - Fenwick is a good, not great team. The 15-20 ranking seems appropriate for now. October 7th will be interesting, but don't see them being challenged again in the Green.

On the Montini side - the general talent seems to be there, but they have multiple linemen playing both ways, two inexperienced juniors QBs, missing the starting RB, lackluster play-calling, lackluster defensive tackling, and (so far) don't appear to have the swagger of year's past. Not ready to call them out, but they appear to be down for the count at the moment.

It's one thing to lose - but to get beat 38-6? Wow - that is not just losing... It is losing and getting dominated by the other team.

I figured Montini would have trouble with BR and MC - but I figured they would be 6-3 or 5-4 at worst. Assuming no miracles when playing BR and MC.....that means they have 4 losses in the books and have to basically run the table on their remaining games.

Except for the fact they play at BR. Let me guess, you live south of 55th Street, right? lol

I don't know what's going on but at this point I would like to see them go to a JCA style of offense with West at QB, the three running backs being Walker, Smith and Foster/Karczewski/Shilgallis/Quaglia/Fendanzo. Our QB's are not doing well and our receivers are dropping too many passes to run the spread.

This offense puts the teams strength (speed) in the best position to win games by controlling the clock and minimizing the amount of time the defense is on the field. On the defensive side of the ball I kept hearing them call out Slater's name so let's start him at LB.

Either this or let's switch to more of a power running game with Orlando at QB and Karzewski/Fendanzo getting time at running back. I think having more of a running QB for the Broncos could help out.

What year is this with Gene Nudo at Fenwick? He usually gets the program rolling around year 3. He won a state title at Driscoll in 1990 in year 3.

I got to the game at half time and Fenwick was up 24-3. Talk about a big letdown. I understand from his dad that #26 was taken out as LB in the middle of the 2nd period and I saw he didn't go back in until the middle of the 4th period. Did #26 make a lot of mistakes or missed tackles in the first half. This kid is too good of an athlete to be on the sidelines for half the game. I agree that they definitely have some talented players on the team but for some reasons they aren't playing like it.

Someone told me Walker looked like he hurt his hamstring during the game. He didn't play during the second half. Smith did a great job running the ball but the entire defense was keying on him. During the 3rd period Montini was driving down the field and had second down and a yard to go and they passed the ball. They were still in the game at that point. Incompletion. On third down they gave it to Smith and he was stopped inches short of a first down. Maybe that was the time for a bigger running back to get the ball.

Didn't see any two back sets while I was there but they did have Spivak acting as a blocking back a yard off the line. Against LZ they had two people acting as blocking backs, Spivak and Morressey and it seemed to work well. I seen they put in #26 and Orlando in at the end of the game on offense and they had a good series of plays going when time ran out. Maybe it's time for Montini to get creative as you have suggested and spread out who gets the ball running and when you get the running game going then pass. I liked Orlando at QB as a freshmen and soph as he brings a deceptive running style into the game. Thoughts on the above???

Gene,

I did not have a good view of the game so it's hard for me to break down this game. The Fenwick QB was great and RB Lally did well. It seems the Fenwick linemen were much bigger than they were just one year ago.

I felt like our QB play is not up to par and our wide receivers are dropping too many balls to run the spread. This hurts us because the clock stops, the chains are not moving and the defense does not get a rest and for most of the game the defense is on the field. If we are unable to catch the football, then let's change the offense. Walker played and it looked like he was going to break a long one to the end zone but then pulled up with the hamstring issue. Never was in the game after that.

I think the coaching staff will be tempted very soon just going with Orlando at QB who is a running QB and maybe using the option. This means the defense cannot just focus on stopping Smith but also Orlando. As said before I think they need Shilgalis and West at WR and #26 in the slot if they want the offense to produce. I don't know the status of West but he does not seem to look anywhere near 100% yet.

I watched the Soph game and Montini won 29-0. These guys can really play and we have playmakers everywhere including WR, defensive line, running back and at DB. I would like to see a few of these guys called up but the only problem is a lot of them are freshmen.

We have had so much talent at QB over recent years with Blake, Rhode, Westerkamp, Pechloff, Wills and Norgle and now it seems we are just struggling. I think we may need a change in the offense.

I'm reading a lot of montini guys second guessing the staff. Don't you guys think they know what they're doing after almost 40 years with coach A? They didn't just forget how to coach. Maybe they just don't have the horses this year.

Not specifically regarding Montini, but after all the years of being told its coaching and hard work not having the horses is not a valid answer. So at least theyre being consistent.

I've never been on that great coaching/work harder bandwagon. Having your primary RB out and not having stability at QB will lead to some character building games. It happens.

I have a lot of respect for all the coaches especially Coach A. I am sure that they are competent and capable of evaluating the talent they have on the team. There is no disrespect meant to any of the coaches in anything I have mentioned and I am sure that goes for Wassup13. We are died in the wool Montini fans. That being said, I have seen the varsity and underclassmen games over the last several years and they have the "horses" to be a better football team. There are a lot of talented athletes on the varsity at this time.

I feel that Edgy's free football forum is for guys like me and Wassup13 to express out thoughts about what we feel are are things which could maybe improve the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. By the way, I know that many of the fans in the stands feel very frustrated as I and Wassup13 are and make some of the same observations we have mentioned in previous posts. I still have a lot of hope that Montini's varsity will rebound and make the state playoffs.

The visiting team stands were a joke at Triton. You had to sit on the top of the stands to see anything. I got to see on Edgys twitter a video of how effective the Fenwick QB was during first half of the game. I heard someone mention that Fenwick had 5-6 new transfers in over the last year. Last year we dominated Fenwick in the Frosh and Soph games as well as at the varsity level. What a difference a year makes.

Our QB play has been inconsistent and IMO you are right that the defense is constantly on the field after too many three and outs. In the next game if Morrissey is the starter at QB and he is not productive in the first quarter it might be time to put Orlando in at QB. Should change the entire dynamics of the offense. I also feel that West is not at 100% with his wrist but he has great speed and can spread the defense so that Smith is not the focus of the defense. I'd like to see the offense spread the ball around with Smith being the main RB but occasionally put in the power backs especially in short yardage situations.

Shigalis and Quaglia are very good receivers and have the speed to be successful. I haven't seen a lot of dropped passes but have seen a lot of poor passes from our QB's
especially against MS and Fenwick.

I didn't get the see the Soph game but if they have play makers that can help why not bring them up. Walker played as a soph and did very well.

Montini has had a lot of very good QB's in the past and I believe both Brad Norgle and Morrissey will be okay in the long run as far as passing accuracy is concerned. Orlando is a much better running QB than either but I didn't see him throw much as a Soph as Norgle took most of the snaps.. As a freshman he was a pretty good passer
so there is hope. I for one am optimistic that this can all be turned around but only time will tell.

They are not high but they are raised so you can see. The stands at triton sit on ground level by the second quarter no one was sitting in the first five rows. It wouldn't take much to raise them up

Please let us know who the 5-6 transfers are that Fenwick has?

I heard it was:
  • Cam Newton
  • JJ Watt
  • Adrian Peterson
  • Cam Chancellor
  • KJ Wright
  • Navarro Bowman.
Not a bad haul for the Friars!! knowing this - I think Fenwick should move up in Edgy's rankings and the much delayed DSR rankings for this week.

Never been on the visitors side, but if it as bad as Triton was they need to fix it. I wasn't talking about the amount of people that the stands could fit but rather the elevation of the stands where if you sat in the two lower rows all you see were the backs of the players on the sidelines.

I am not making any excuses for the loss to Fenwick, they were clearly the better team Friday and outplayed us in every facet of the game. Can only hope we get to see them next year for a rematch.

Pardon me for repeating what I heard. Still a free country as far a speech is concerned or maybe I am wrong on that but you are free to ridicule it and I probably deserve it for putting it on this forum. Didn't say it was a factual comment. .. I

Don't worry Gene. I was only teasing on the NFL transfers. Broncos will be just fine. All they need to do is get 5 wins by hook or by crook and they in the game to defend their title. Most schools would give their right foot for even half the success Montini has had over the years. I've always said I give massive kudos to Montini scheduling - they take on any and all comers and I love that.

Thanks Voodoo. I wasn't trying to diminish Fenwick's victory in any way but shouldn't have put what I heard in my post. Montini has been accused of this in the past and one of the Montini fathers even commented "You mean like Montini has done in the past" to a few laughs.

But they are very long running from the 20 to the 20 and the key is they are inside of the track and right on the field. They are the best visiting seats in the state with the exception of Nazareth. You not only see everything, you hear the hitting, you hear the coaches and it's like you, yourself are playing in the game.

The seats at Triton are a joke! I moved all over the field and could not see anything.
