of talent on offense with Nelson, Davis, and Fletcher. I am curious as to what the USM fan thinks USM would be if Bower was still HC.

On offense, they have weapons, but although Davis is putting up overall decent #'s - he's still a freshman QB. His two biggest problems are (1) delivering the ball on time - he's a tick late on getting the ball to receiver coming out of cuts and (2) he doesn't throw a good deep ball at all most of the time.

Their other biggest problem on offense is very untimely penalties. They're constantly driving to the opponents 30 yard line and then getting a penalty. Finally they're FG kicking is possibly worse than ours.

Defensively their DL is about like ours - they can't generate a pass rush when rushing 4. However, their secondary is pretty horrible all the way around. They don't cover well, don't tackle well and take poor pursuit angles.

Still they should have beat Marshall and UTEP which would put them at 4-2 instead.

I'm betting Fedora signs about 6 JUCO's to start on defense alone next year.

we can't stop anyone; we don't tackle well; we get no pass rush whatsoever. Most of the defense is very young and the vast majority (as some like to say on here 8 out of 10 - literally) of fans blame Bower on the cupboard being bare.

My guess, if Bower were still around, would be a similar record, but the games we were close would be less close. I think the offense is doing fine for the most part (not sure what happened Saturday). Bower's offenses were more like MSU's - painful to watch.

That's just my quick, non-expert take.

Bower wouldn't have beaten boise st or auburn. and the marshall and utep games were certainly not lost b/c of the offense.

Bower was asleep at the switch recruiting for years. It's catching up. Nobody returned on the two-deep defensive line. It started showing last year and has rolled downhill. Also, the six opponents so far are something like 22-11 combined. The rest of the schedule is much softer.

The offense was ranked 17th overall after last week (that's uncharted territory) but the defense is probably around 100 (again, uncharted territory.)

Not many who don't pay much attention realized how far Bower had let it slip. Last year was done with smoke and mirrors and a bunch of seniors. I'm still convinced someday Fedora will be in the SEC or Big 12 and we'll be saying "remember when..." He just didn't have many groceries left to cook with this year.

Oh, and the addition is very nice with the HD board as a bookend. It's not like high school, except on Saturday, anymore.

Let's hope for his sake things turn out better for him in those conferences than they did for Bobby Collins and Curly Hallman.

It's predictable. New coach comes in, fans get fired up, wool grows out of control, etc. Well, the season starts, the losses start piling up, nobody wants to consider the possibility that the new coach isn't as good as advertised so they pile on the former coach. Now, sometimes the former coach really did a poor job with the program (Jackie in 2003 for example), but typically it isn't as bad as the fans make it out to be. Rather, the new coach either isn't as good as the fans thought or he has trouble adjusting. Bower had a decent record last year. I just don't buy that he wouldn't have had a decent record this year. USM fired Bower because they were tired of the same old, same old 6-7 wins a year. Now they are looking at the possibility of a really bad season. Sounds familiar don't it.

Bower got fired 1) because his relation with Giannini was hate-hate, and 2) Bower was in full mail-in mode by 2003, his last C-USA championship, and it took four years for the full suck to seep in because the crap conference that C-USA has been allowed it to be masked.

At the Arkansas State game last year, last home game of the year, there were maybe 10,000 fans there. Bower is a prickly, nearly aristocratic personality, so he had no "native son" love to fall back on. People voted with their feet. I'd say the comparison to Nutt at Arkansas is very valid. Bower just finally wore out his welcome, success or not. If it doesn't work out, it had to be tried. It's a gamble, but the other side of it was a certain slow-motion slide into Bolivia.

Out of about 20-22 defensive players that are getting playing time, 4 are seniors. 7 are freshmen. Hopefully they will improve. They should. I was actually impressed with them saturday.

14 Freshman, 12 Sopohmores and 8 new Juco's played against boise st, as well as most of the year. The younger players are getting valuable experience, and the better teams have more upperclassmen playing.
Boise State started thirteen 13 seniors, while we started five 5 seniors total on both sides of the ball.

Harbor is right. This sorry team just didnt get here last year. this has been going on for the past 7 years slowly for those that havent watched CUSA dwindle down behind 2 1-AA conferences...barely squeaking by at that and our production continuted to get worse...defensive recruiting taking a back seat...and graduating practically the whole defensive line in 2001(the D from 1996 - 2000) where we had some of our best years....and most of those players are playing in the NFL now. please tell me you understand why bower was fired. if youve been following it all you would get the clear picture.

when a coach is fired and a new coach is hired, the same procedure follows:

1) hype
2) disappointing start
3) the fanbase explains to everyone that the previous coach had gotten lazy on the recruiting trail and it will take time to rebuild, nevermind the preseason expectations

It's like a broken record.
