Final roster spot - you taking Griffen or Aberdeen?

Dont think offense will be problem

Pope can adjust offense scheme with different players, and with playmaker in PG, we should have better open 3 opportunities than last year

But we seriously need athleticism, size, and strength, these can not be taught in defense.

I am OK with the current roster, Pope is offense guru. Do not worry about offense

I THINK I would lean towards Aberdeen, because he is another guy who can be a playmaker FOR OTHER PEOPLE off the dribble.

Last year, when Kerr when down, Butler was the only guy we had who could do that. Oweh could create for himself, but not really others.

Right now, I think we're in the same boat with Lowe (but he is better at it than Butler was).

But Aberdeen gives us that 2nd guard who can create for others as well as get his own shot.

So I THINK I would go for Aberdeen, but I'd be happy with either one.

It'd be a consolation for me because I really want CBM or Sarr, but I'd be happy with these 2.

I like Aberdeen a lot and root for him because he grew up near where I live, but I think I prefer Griffin for next year’s team.

Because we win so many games with “kill shots,” I would love to see one more guy who can string together threes in a flurry. I think Griffin is more likely to be that guy.

I think they are both decent defensively. Assist rates are also similar. Aberdeen is probably the better ball-handler, but I’m less worried about that than many. Think Lowe, Johnson, Perry are enough.

JJ can likely give you what people are projecting for Griffen at the same size. Aberdeen gives us another option at PG.

I don't think either are great fits, but especially not Aberdeen. Johnson can easily fit in the backup PG role. Johnson averaged 7+ APG last year in the OTE academy and 33.1% on 3s.

Oweh - 36.1%
Chandler - 34.7%
Perry - 32.1%
Noah - 33.3%
Dioubate - 35.1%
Garrison - 30.0%

If you parse the numbers, yeah Garrison and Chandler shot better in the second half (Noah and Perry were better in the first-middle part of the season) and Griffen shot 40% at Alabama as a sophomore. Lowe shot 35% as a freshman.....but hope isn't a strategy imo. UL's 3 portal transfers were all above 40% on 3s and while that's not what Pope seems to be building here. Another established shooter should be on the priority list.

Why would Zrno not be a better option, shot around 44% from the three? And why would Watkins not be a better option, averaged around 18, rebounds and said to be the 5th best guy in the portal this year?

News to me it’s the last roster spot. Are we at 14 players? I feel like you gotta take Aberdeen bc of his ability to do more AND he won a title and that is habit forming. Seems crazy he would bounce but he needs to get paid. I like our players but I would have thought pope would have several guys who shoot at 40% or above from 3 but this is obviously something else he’s developing. Would be nice if Ian Jackson was the surprise guy

Aberdeen, because he can back up pg. Might possibly get 2 years from Aberdeen. A little more versatile than Griffen. I like Griffen if that's who they get. FWIW, I think crazy CBM is better than both of them

I like both guys. if it comes down to those 2 and no others, Could a new Griffen rise from the ashes of Kansas? Or will it be Aberdeen.

I would say Aberdeen is already used to playing our style. So lets go that way. I am sure Griffen is as well but he might have flamed out at KU.

Aberdeen would be a great fit. Tough as nails, great defender and can handle the ball if needed. There was a reason why he was in the game during crunch time the last 3 minutes of the national champ game. These are the types of players you need to win tournament games.

I agree on preferring an elite shooter/scorer for the last spot but between the two I would prefer another facilitator. I am dubious of JJ as a PG against SEC pressure.

I think you’re right that the consensus is we need another point guard. However, I have consistently been of the mind that we don’t need another pg. I’m very confident in Jasper as a backup point. I like Griffen because he is willing to take the very, very deep threes and I think those put a lot of pressure on the defense. Aberdeen is a better defender and I certainly won’t be crying into my pillow if we get him instead. Either one and I think we are set.

The SEC had a historically good group of guards last year. Fland, Philon, Pettiford, Johnson and Fears from the freshman ranks (only Acuff looks like that this year) Then there were the seniors - Clayton, M Sears, J Sears, Pedulla, Zeigler, Taylor, Hoggard.

This year, so far, there's Xaivan Lee, Nigel Pack, J Gillespie, and F Collins. Hubbard and Dedan Thomas are the only So/Jr that look tough too. So, the leagues collection of lead guards is way down.

yeah, I think Aberdeen just said yes before Griffen had the chance to do so. I suspect Griffen ends up back at Bama now. In the end, my guess is Pope wanted Aberdeen's combo guard - and better defense - skills over Griffen's small forward skills. I'll be very surprised if this isn't the end of portal season. I think we're done let's roll.

People are going to be surprised, very pleasantly so, that JJ is gonna be out there lighting it up for us. He still might be the most surprising player (and now, even moreso, with such a stacked roster, and not necessarily looking at a freshman to stand out in the crowd) that we have playing next year.

CMP and the staff definitely know a lot of things we don't, and I'll trust his judgment on who he wants, where, and when, when the time comes.

We are going to be very good next year. Trust is well placed.
