I would say since the Arkansas game that clinched the West for us. Getting to 5-5 and beating a top 5 team would be massive for the direction of the program.

I don't know that we've beaten any team of this stature since then.

but emotionally I don't know where this ranks. Maybe since our final 4 birth? Or in football our SEC West title?

This game kinda has the 1996 feel to it. We are decent but have a losing record. They are pretty good coming in expecting a cake walk. If we could win, I can see the program really starting to turn the corner in picking up a bowl bid and then recruits.

I missed virtually the entire football season in 1996. What was Bama's record when we beat them in 1996?

They had one loss and were ranked in the top 10. I don't recall them being near as hyped as they are this year. However, I can see a common theme. If we win Saturday we turn the corner. Much like we did that day in 1996. My comparison is based more on us and where we at than them.

Had to defeat Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss to make a bowl that year

Upset Alabama and then a week later pissed it all away with an overtime loss to Arkansas...first overtime game ever played at Davis Wade Stadium

Since the last time we beat them in Starkville, beating Bama is becoming a fairly regular event.

When we beat bama when they were ranked number 1? That would be the biggest win but this one is a VERY close second.

Edited: Sorry...I read it as "biggest win since..." not "biggest MSU win since..." My mistake

I know some of you weren't born then, but still....the year and score is etched in sidewalks in places on campus.

Big win over a top 5 opponent on national television.
The win itself would be a lot like the 2000 Florida game. But the ramifications of the win would be much greater. Not just for the fact that it could cost Bama a shot at the national title, but for the boost it would give our program. A win this weekend would be a massive turning point.
