I have second-guessed many of his decisions this week.
Wouldn't have done that, I often thought.

But as an MSU baseball fan since I was a student in 1963, I like winning!
I now back off, let the guy do his own coaching.

I like winning.

Cohen is a winner. He made game winning decisions last night that won the game. The problem with so called "baseball experts" is when things don't get executed, then the coach is an idiot. But when things are executed it's no big deal!

RCD, I've been following Msu baseball since 1970, one thing I've learned over the years is patience, baseball has so many "what to do in this situation" that sometimes work and sometimes they don't.

By win percentage:

1979 - 48-12(Omaha)
1970 - 32-8(Super-Regional equivalent aka regional final in 26 team format)
1989 - 54-14(Super-Regional equivalent aka regional final in 48 team format)
1985 - 50-15(Omaha -- 3rd overall)
1984 - 45-16(Super-Regional equivalent aka regional final in 36 team format)
1983 - 42-15(Super-Regional equivalent aka regional final in 36 team format)
1981 - 46-17(Omaha)
2013 - 43-16 -- ??

This will, basically inevitably, be our best win percentage since 1989 -- against one of the toughest overall schedules that I can remember us facing. This team is better, by record, than our last FOUR Omaha teams -- and our last seven Super-Regional(or equivalent) teams.

We're just a shade ahead of where I thought we would be in the preseason(and I caught some grief for predicting it and sticking with it through the bad points of the season) despite not having our two best MLB arm talents make any significant contribution at any point this year.

How good would LSU be without Nola and Eades? How good would Vandy be withing Ziomek and Beede?

This team has overachieved this season -- and they've done it in the face of some pretty significant adversity...

What woodruff and Evan didnt contribute, Ross and girodo did. A complete 180 from a few years ago where we could only rely on our starters to win a game, now, any starter in the league would love to have a chad or Ross (Myles Gentry developing into that role now) behind them to take pressure off of them. If we don't have middle relievers like we've got, we don't have 42 wins.

Definitely disagree on the over-achieved statement... Look around the SEC and count the Freshmens starting or contributing considerably, then look at our roster and see that we have mostly upper classmens contributing.

Heck Alabama had 4 freshmen to play all 59 games to date. That is astounding when you consider that they have a pretty decent record with those youngsters out there.

Edited to add: Now Our Men's Basketball team over-achieved.**

So, should we apologize for recruiting better with our upperclassmen than other teams -- despite those players all coming into a precarious situation with a coach that was far from guaranteed success? Of course not. If you look around college baseball, the vast majority of teams that go deep into postseasons are littered with and carried by upperclassmen.

Heck Alabama had 4 freshmen to play all 59 games to date. That is astounding when you consider that they have a pretty decent record with those youngsters out there.
So, 2012 was an astounding success for us then? After all, we had success without a single upperclassman position player -- and only a couple of pitching contributors?

SPS rewind to your actual thoughts among others: http://forums.sixpackspeak.com/showthread.php?105093-It-s-year-5-for-Cohen-when-he-was-hired/page2

I think in Cohen year 5, MSU should be in the Top 4 pitching staffs in SEC games, the Top 4 Hitting teams in SEC games, and the Top 4 defensive teams in SEC games. Are we?

Those first 17 games were all pushovers and it is obvious by how we have played since then. Yes, we play very good SEC teams. That aint gonna change. We Gotta start beating those guys more than they beat us for Cohen to prove he is worth his salary. So far, we are 3-6 or 1-2 against each of these: LSU, UK and Arkansas and also 1-2 against Central Arkansas.

In SEC only games this year:
Batting - 3rd
Pitching - 5th
Fielding - 3rd

So, we essentially met your expectations from the beginning of Cohen's tenure in every facet this year.

I would say, at this point in this season, Cohen's 2013 MSU squad has achieved. At times this year, they did not warrant the achieved status. At times this year, they won games they should not have and lost games they should not have. If they win the SEC tourney for the 2nd consecutive year, then they will have achieved. If they host and win a Regional they will have achieved. If they win a Super Regional and go to Omaha, they will have achieved. If they win the whole dang thing, they will have achieved.

Last Year, MSU achieved. When someone has success, they achieve.

If you graduated from MSU, then you achieved. You didn't over-achieve. What were your goals for MSU this year? What were the Team's goals? What were John Cohen's goals? If they reach those goals, they achieve.

Carry on.
