If we fire Croom, yes, we will receive hell from the national media (probably some local as well). The thing that will be lost in all the fuss though is the fact that we HIRED him to begin with. Backwards ole' Mississippi fired the first black head coach! Well, my question would then be is if we're so damn backwards, why'd we hire him to begin with.

That's just my 2 cents, I'm sick of reading about the national media. If Croom was a white man, he'd be fired after this season no questions asked. But not firing him because he's black is just as racist as hiring him because he's black.

I'm just ready to see MSU be a consistent winner, because I know it can happen.</p>

It's pretty clear what a poor job he is doing. And if we do, who cares? It will blow over just like Ty Willingham's firing did.

There will be a few critics when it happens, but they'll just look stupid when the talking head next to them brings up his record.

We do know from the past 2 Liberty Bowls that 8-1 in CUSA < 4-4 in SEC.

But some dubmass moron will be there saying we're making a mistake, etc. Not that I give two ***** what they may or may not say. I just wanted to point out that if anyone were to raise hell that they'd need to remember he was hired before he was fired.

Look at it this way, we used him to lighten probation.
Croom used us to get approx. 5,000,000 Washingtons. Lets call it even.

even when we hired the guy the media made it less about us and more about how backwards the SEC was. And most of the commentators went as far as to say "Well MSU isnt your Florida, Bama, LSU, not a bigtime SEC school". Yes there will be fallout. How much do i care? depends on how many more games we win this year. I liked you point about how we have both used each other though, hadnt thought of it that way.

for getting rid of Croom. No one can really argue against a move with his record. What we are going to hear over and over and over is that not even a great coach can win at MSU without cheating. There will be lines like Croom will have no trouble finding a job because he was a great coach in an impossible situation, MSU is one of the worst jobs in BCS football, only Jackie could have success here and he got us on probation, etc. We will see commentaries asking, why would anyone want to coach there, things like that.

By giving Croom so much time to build the program, we will look disingenous if we fire him after one winning season. If we gave him time in the beggining why not now after he has stared to have success?

You give a mouse a cookie.... as the saying goes.

is that nationally, no one will care. He'll be fired eventually. This season, next season, whatever. There will be a 30 second piece about his coaching at Mississippi State on ESPN, they'll remind us that he was black, and then they will move on the what happened at last nights NASCAR race. I don't understand why people think the media is going to make a Junction Boys movie out of his tenure here.

Were getting national attention now for being the worst team in the SEC, so who cares?

and having had experience with this kind of thing, the best and most effective way to handle it is to focus on the performance aspect above all other considerations. Set realistic performance standards, document the positive achievements as well as failures; if performance standards are not met, provide an opportunity for the employee to improve within a reasonable time. If they fail to do that, then terminate employment based on the record, make certain it is well documented, and let the chips fall where they may. In the final analysis, we don't have any allegiance to the national media, our allegiance is to our football program and our fan base and supporters. Sounds simple, right???

football stats are pretty available for pretty much anyone.

I don't know what our minimum standards are, but I'm pretty sure that they aren't being met.

There won't be as much as hell coming from the media as you think... of course, yeah, there will be a little, but it won't be an uproar or anything... nationally or locally...

It's like most of you have already said... it's very easy to back up why it should happen, it's WAY more difficult to back up why he should stay... just my opinion...

realistic "hard" standards have not been set. If they aren't definitive enough, it's that more difficult to take action. Falure to set good performance standards is often the most troublesome aspect in dealing with it...having said that, have never seen Mr. Croom's performance standards and wonder if there are any in writing.

I get the feeling that no matter what, he was going to be "martyred" for the rebirth of the program... I've always thought it was going to be the next coach that would get the program to the next level, and Croom was going to have to take the fall... while we lays the foundation, it's someone else who builds the house...

It's been like that at a lot of programs... Oklahoma, UCLA (eventually), even Alabama... Shula had to start cleaning up the mess from the whole Dubose/Franchione/Price fiasco... Saban is finishing it off...

I just hope we make the right choice in bringing in the house builder... I think there's a solid enough foundation...

I have some similar experience in the HR area. In the end, the only concern about the firing would be a legal one -- a suit to pay out the rest of his contract or something due to unlawful terminaton of someone in a protected class. I mean, if the media, etc. gets upset, who gives a ****? The media. If civil rights advocats/community planners get upset, who gives a ****?

It's the lawsuit that is the worry. And the way you address that is by setting down expectations in writing and let the chips fall where they may.

compensated to the tune of millions of dollars. He shouldn't have any complaints. He knew what was at stake when he took the job. If he didn't, then he's more naive than originally thought, and another indication of his poor judgment.

season out of 5 because our defense scored points to win some games & still no offens, can't anybody blame us for wanting to have a chance for a better team after being in the cellar almost a decade now.
