First NIL Purchase Experience

My little Grandsons favorite player is Logan Tanner so in late August we ordered him a Logan Tanner jersey for his late September birthday. He is now 5. We placed the order on Logan Tanners web site and the order confirmation came back from some company in China. Of course it did not deliver in time for his birthday so we went to Starkville and bought a different jersey at Maroon and Company, although not exactly what he wanted. Anyway, the jersey we ordered eventually shipped from WUHAN, CHINA of all places. It finally arrived a couple of days ago and looks fine, other than being an Alabama Walmart crimson color. We are used to that so it will be ok and he won’t know the difference when he gets it for Christmas. Since it came from WUHAN CHINA I told my wife to wash the hell out of that thing before wrapping it. We figured it was a scam company that got our $80 and we would never see a jersey and we’re surprised when something actually showed up. We tried to follow up with the company that sent the confirmation but of course no one responded. I guess I am rambling but just be careful. Logan’s web site said “in stock” and we finally got it from China two and a half months later. I doubt that our athletes or the school has any idea about the actual business activities that could go on in the name of a particular player and eventually there will be some awkward or embarrassing situation to explain. What if a company has approval to market under the name of one of our female athletes and comes out with a line of stripper glitter in their name? Silly suggestion? Of course it is, but you see my point. Is John Cohen, or the school, or the NCAA on top of monitoring the risk? Of course not.

Take a “Buyer beware” approach to all this. Many of these deals were slapped together by the lowest bidder. I can’t wait to see the first blowback of “your NIL deal sux” from fans. It’s going to ruin some kids career.

Schools have had to take significant actions to try to comply with these rules that were thrust upon them. Unfortunately, the rules are different in different states (due to variations in state laws), and there is no one uniform standard right now. MSU is able to prevent some deals (alcohol, illegal products), and the university can still prevent its own marks and images from being used, but they can’t force a player to do business with good companies. It is a mess, and I think a lot of people are concerned about customer dissatisfaction and the impact that can have on the reputations of the players.

I ordered a computer desk chair on eBay I thought that Widget Company would have in stock. They didn’t. Just a reseller.

it shipped fairly quickly from China….. right to a random address in Georgia. Someone signed for it and is probably using it till this day.

Ebay did refund my money and I just ran down to the office supply store like I should have done first.

The whole point of NIL is to NOT have the the NCAA or the school or the athletic department or John Cohen be involved with the players earning money on their name and likeness. Unfortunately these young businessmen and businesswomen with no experience are going to make poor decisions and will get scammed just like any inexperienced business owner might. It will be up to them to make sure their Brand is not tarnished.
