This is ********. Very few private schools provide a worse education than the public school its students would be in. A lot of private schools in ms aren't anything special, but theyre almost always better than the alternative for a majority of their students and are often the best school in the are period.
BS?? If it makes you feel better. But that is not the case in many small towns. The small academy in my town does not come close to the public school. Not just me, but most fair-minded people here acknowledges the fact. I agree that many public systems are failing. The number one reason is that they aren't supported by those of us who have the capacity to effect there performance. There are a few communities in this State with good public school systems. The common thread in those systems is that they are supported by the MAJORITY of the community. It's like SWAC football...it sucks because the best players and supporters with resources go to the SEC.
Now, I suggest that you study the history of the Mississippi educational system, circa 1970. Because you might not want to do the research, I will give you this. After 20 years of fighting segregation, the Green and Alexander decisions killed the hope of maintaining separate school systems. Looking for an alternative, whites in the Delta and many other black-majority school districts in Mississippi came to see abandonment of the public schools for private segregation academies as the only way to preserve “quality” white education. Between 1966 and 1970, the number of private schools in the state more than doubled and the number of students attending these schools tripled; most of this growth occurred in black-majority districts. So I guess you are correct; academies were founded in Mississippi to preserve and provide quality white education, superior to desegregated public education.
So there’s no contradiction to say that there are issues of personal responsibility and accountability that have to be addressed in the public school system, while still acknowledging that some of the specific pathologies in the public system are a direct result of our history.” Public vs. private, we should have chosen Belhaven over MSU.
Until we all acknowledge and confront these truths, there will always be a prominent place for the ole miss mentality. I digress...
