I see many people in the Challenge contest are picking Gretna. What is scouting report on Floyd ? What is their best win ? Worst loss ?

Can they throw the ball ?

Not a great throwing team, not great on offense period. They do have a pretty solid defense. Have to stop the QB from running and fb trap. Qb not fast but he moves pretty good. Floyd is solid but not great. Played Giles well first half.

Floyd has some good athletes on defense and they are a hard hitting bunch. Try to mostly run the ball 3-4 yards a pop. Don't remember any passing game that worked against Glenvar.

Gretna’s strength is defense.....a one dimensional team may be good for Gretna.

I say Floyd wins this very close game. Speed doesn’t matter much if you run right at it.

That should’ve never happened. LoL!! They will beat the cleats off of Gretna.

This game lies squarely in head coaches hands and his offensive play calling. He can come out and try to get his speed and play makers in space with some innotive ways or he can do the same old same and put it all on the defence. It's that simple.

Which one is it? Close game or cleats knocked off?

Who knows, maybe a cleat will fly off while someone is kicking a FG. LoL!!!

That doesn't help. I thought you had knowledge, I was going to make sure of my pick. But you got me on the fence

Turnovers and yellow flags killed Gretna. Threw ball OK. Gretna had not much success running ball. Floyd threw 2 passes if my memory is correct. One on their first play and one on a trick play.

Maybe coldest game I ever been to.

Not trying to make any excuses for Gretna, however they really missed those 2 linebackers suspended for this game. That said floyd county is well coached with a really good running game.Man was it cold up there in the mountains.........

I watched Floyd and GW up there in late November in 2002 in -20 wind chills. Last night was nothing.

Saw a playoff game in Blacksburg back in 84 with -25 wind chills.

Felt good to me at Mitchell Stadium watching Bluefield last night, refreshing.

Gretna just kept shooting themselves in the foot and refs sure didn't help either. Never so many things go wrong in one game. We got ball first and moved quickly down field and scored but was called back on holding call. Thing it was a bs call but what really don't like is flag is not thrown when supposed holding occured but 15 yards later after qb scored and then throws the flag. That drive then stalls on downs. Floyd then drives ball down field but gets stripped on ten and we recover. After one run for first down we throw interception right to Floyd with no recievers around. They drive short field and get first score. We complete long pass on next drive but miss two to make it 7-6. After holding them on downs we get ball back and have recievers drop ball right in his hands running wide open over the middle. Floyd then makes long drive and scores to go up 14-6. After kickoff on our first play snap goes over qbs head and Floyd recovers 20 yards from end zone. They drive it in to go up 21-6 at half. We get strip and ball on second half kickoff to set up short field. Our qb runs for touchdown and carrying the ball like a loaf of bread gets it smacked out of his hand from behind just before he crosses goal line and Floyd recovers. After forcing punt we drive it right back down and qb scored this time but missed two so it's 21-12. Floyd drives to midfield and on 4-1 gets stood up at line of scrimmage. Refs mark the ball there. Then far side ref comes running over and moves ball forward little over yard. Worst part is he is staring right down the line at the marker as he spots it. Floyd goes on to drive for another TD to go up 28-12. We then drive down field to 15 on two long passed then qb scrambles and runs out of bounds for ten yard loss. Then have another pass over the middle wide open in hands dropped. That was the fifth drop of the night. After turn over on downs Floyd drives the ball and gets stripped again and we get ball back. That's when it gets real interesting. Our first play recievers stops fifteen yards over the middle wide open and ball bounces right off his chest as he turns to qb and hits the ground. Him and the rest go walking back to the huddle. Next thing I know Floyd picks ball up and is running toward end zone. No one really knows what's going on but whistle hadn't blew and ref had called it a fumble. End up getting sideline penalties on that one and that was the nail breaker. After watching the playlist on video again it is even worst. Not sure it even touched his hands unless he touches ball as it bounces off his chest as he reaches for it as it goes to the ground. Blink your eyes and you miss whole thing. Floyd played good game and we made too many mistakes but that call is WOW all I can say.

I haven’t seen Gretna play since play-off loss to Grayson county. What has happened with Gretna being a regular state title contender?

Talent is about is good as it once was. Youth I think was big factor this year but main difference is coaching.
Gretna is very young so the future looks bright.i think only 4 seniors on the entire squad J V squad was also very good.i,myself do not know all the players but i assumed Gretna was missing those 2 starting linebackers which hurt a lot against a run dominant team.

Yes it hurt not having those two linebackers also they were teams top two in tackles. My son was the only senior on defense so was hoping for at least one playoff win. Also only started two seniors on offense. They should get even better next year with more experience now.

Floyd is well coached and disciplined. Not a ton of talent, but the coaching staff usually gets the most out of what they have up there.

The best thing Gretna can do is Hire Mickey Crouch as there coach if they ever want to be serious contenders again . I think Mr Simpson has had plenty of chances by now . When is the last time Gretna has made it pass the first round ?

Last time Gretna made it pass first round was 2011. Also that was our last state championship. If I recall correctly we beat:

John Battle
Giles
Riverheads
Amelia
Goochland

I agree he has had enough chances but honestly can't blame him for this loss. Yea could have called few plays differently but he aired it out and we just played terrible. Never seen so many dropped passes in a game. These weren't contested passes can think off three that was laid right over their shoulder in arms running at least ten yards ahead of closest defenders that all three should have been scores. Had another one tipped in air and defender went to ground and our best recievers turned and had ball come right down into both hands on one yard line and dropped it. Had qb fumble on one yard line not holding ball securely getting ready to walk in end zone. Had two drives stopped on downs inside red zone after marching ball down field. Play calling in red zone was a factor there. Had two point conversion bounce of chest. Had opening TD called back. We should have had 4-5 scores. Defense missed them two LBs but didn't play too bad. Twice came off field and had to go straight back on field after one plat and turnover with there backs to the goaline. Floyd scored 14 of there points off turnovers getting ball right at goal line and last one off that dropped pass called fumble. Defense actually only allowed 14 points off drives of more than 20 yards.
