We did shoot poorly, including layups missed and many open shots. That happens. Wisconsin shot well with treys but only scored 62 points, so our D came to play. We just couldn't buy a shot. That happens.

I hate to say it but the NU team I saw out there today isn’t going anywhere. They lack a floor general that keeps the team organized and the ball moving crisply, they have no offensive identity, and their defensive play is inconsistent with regular mental lapses. I just don’t see how this team goes on any sort of multi game run. Hope I am wrong but I was pretty unimpressed by what I saw.

Law, Taylor and Turner missed tons of good looks. Something is not right with Law, missing shots he was making—maybe the knee isssue. The other two are shooting below their potential based on prior results/data.

Just hoping we can squeak into the NIT, but not so sure after this effort. Without Law scoring like he did earlier this season, this team has no chance. Falzon bailed us out vs. Indiana but....

I agree with you about Law. He does not have the same explosion I am used to seeing from him. The problem with the offense is that there doesn’t seem to be a consistent rhythm and even open shots are being taken out of the flow of the offense. That to me is all related to the lack of a true floor general. Greer has some potential but he does look like a HS Senior right now trying to play against veteran college players.

Greer is better than I expected and to my eyes plays more poised than I'd expect from a true frosh who is not a big time athlete being thrown into big ten play. He had a couple of really nice drives to the basket that our guys rarely do successfully over the years. I think a PG might settle down the offense a bit, but in truth CC offenses have never been works of beauty even with BMac. We've had plenty of makeable shots but our perimeter shooters have been unreliable. Falzon did hit a couple more 3s today but Wisc started closing out better on him. But he needs to be part of the equation because him and Taylor are the only "pure" shooters and we need 1 or both to get hot to win BT games.

Win game favored to win: “You know, 10-10 gets a bid!”
Lose game where other team was heavy favorite: “We stink.”

Well I hoped for a different outcome at UW but now I’m looking for a home win against Wisky when my brother and high school friend are in town. Regardless, we’ll be heading to the Green Mill afterwards, still wearing purple if anyone else wants to join in the celebration.

we arent very good. can we get in the NIT?

Why give up with more than half the conference season remaining? We are ranked about top 50 in NET rankings and top 40 would likely get into tourney. It’s a long shot because every game is so tough in big ten but why give up as a fan?

Did you also give up on the football team when it was much worse at the start of the season?

im not sure what you are talking about???
Are you saying that we are very good?
Not sure what this has to do with me or football but the football team was pretty good after the first few games.
At any rate, not sure what that has to do with my question.

Very tough to win in this conference Purdue is annihilating Michigan State. Chances for postseason seem quite dim.

Is that what you were thinking when we were 1-3 got blitzed by Duke, lost to Akron and blew a 17 pt lead vs UM? That was a worse start then the b-ball team has had. Of course it’s an uphill climb and odds are against us but I don’t see why lose hope when there is a lot of season left and we are literally ranked in top 50.

Yes, actually, it was. I never thought the team was going like 4-8 and I always thought a bowl game was a good shot. It’s simple history.

You think b-ball team is gonna be below .500? Bowl game is MUCH easier than making tourney. My point in general is I see a lot if not

70% of teams make bowl games. Only 20% of teams make tourney. Different bar. Did you think the football team was going to be "good/?" If truly you were optimistic that the team would have a good to great season when we were 1-3 I cease and desist. Peace.

why does it matter what someone thinks about the football team? No, the bar isnt lower, either. Its fairly easy for a good bigten team to make the dance. I think 8 out of 14 will go. We just arent very good. May have to start playing the hounger players alot more unless collins is focused on nit chances.

I think we learned several years ago that disappointing non-con games don't necessarily reflect what NU truly is on the football field, so yes, I expected that we could still be fine/good.

Basketball has had one - ONE - year that most other Power 5 schools would consider "pretty good."

NU basketball remains the most thankless, painful thing to root for in pro/major college sports.

Maybe CCC just worked the team too hard before UW. I think we all expected a lot more.

There's still a season to save here. At MD, keep it close and rest the starters enough to finish the game.

I like Greer, but he is not ready.
Without seeing practice it's hard to know if he's really ready & clearly he can't cover mistakes or take over with sheer athleticism. That said, the offense shows more flow when he is in and his recent defense is much better than at the start of the season. His drives against Wis showed promise.

Given the very poor shooting & defensive lapses from Turner, I would be inclined to give Greer a longer leash and see how he & the team play with him at lead guard. He looks acts and passes like a point guard. I definitely think he will get more entry passes to Pardon --our best option--and likely then be available on cuts to the basket or for open jumpers. He does need to take his shot when he's open & not defer as no one else is shooting that well. At the least, it would help him improve for next year when he will be needed even with Buie & perhaps a grad transfer.

Nice post. I will be interested in seeing whether Turner’s minutes for Greer, and Taylor’s minutes for Falzon both decrease.

No doubt Greer is the best option to run the point on the team right now but that is a big part of the problem.

A win over a Penn State team that is definitely worse than us won’t do much for my hopes.

I don't know how often you've seen PSU play this year, but despite their record they are certainly capable of beating NU if the Cats don't start putting the ball in the basket. Maybe the home court will help.

I have already flushed this season. KenPom projects 3 wins in last 10 games, 16-15 record. That is not going to get an NIT bid. But a KenPom projection is not why I don’t bother watching NU games anymore. This team is simply unwatchable. It’s one thing to have a mediocre record — it’s another to be mediocre and bad offensively.

10 games to go. Lots of time to turn it around. And 16-15 might actually get us an NIT bid depending on who we beat and how we do in the BTT. The BIG is THAT good. And I'll never stop watching, until I'm dead...
