Football - biggest hole to fill

What is our biggest hole to fill going into the fall?

1. Corners? Will we be able to cover anyone?

2. Offensive line?

3. Quarterback? Croom left tons of talent (sarcasm)

4. Wideout? Freshmen better help

5. Kicking game?

The corners really worry me. I hope McPhee helps with the pass rush, as a good pass rush can really help cornerbacks. If Langston and Anthony Johnson aren't eligible, we are going to be thin. I think Mullen's offense will lead to better o-line, QB, and wideout play.

Any thoughts?

I think Croom recruited well enough to get us solid. We just have no depth, we can't afford any casualties at all. See last year. I'm glad the way it turned out with Croom gone, but let's face it, if gungate doesn't happen and Pegues isn't suspended we probably have a winning season last year. If Croom wasn't so stupid on gameday he couldv'e gotten by.

Want another example? It's easy to use Ole Miss. They are in the same boat, except O recruited a little better than Croom. If Oher (Brown MSU equivalent), Marshay Green (Johnson MSU equivalent) and Powe (Wesley MSU equivalent had gotten suspended, I bet their season wouldn't have turned out like it did. Not to mention adding in some injuries. 2007 was a very lucky year for us when we didn't have many casualties, as they did last year. Overall they were more talented and game-day coached/prepared, but you get the jist of my analogy.
Edit: But my answer to your question of the biggest hole on the team, probably defensive backs. We have one that we know can play right now, Charles Mitchell. Alot of others I think have talent but are rookies, Watson, Anderson, Broomfield, Bonner. I think Zach Smith sucks personally. Good thing is we have lots of freshman athletes coming in that could back them up. If Langston/Clark/Johnson come back this might be a strength.

I like your optimism, but Croom didn't recruit worth a ****.

We are thin at CB, WR, and QB and we are lacking talent at DT, and just about everywhere else.

Powe was a backup DL like Quentin Wesley was, thus the analogy. No, they wouldn't make as much difference as the starters. But yes, they would have had an impact.

Nitpick the post some other way.

he just couldn't do it because he was stupid, AND the fact that he had alot of player casualties. I mean, his players were alright in '07. And you half to give the man half credit for the class we just signed. I believe Croom when he says it was tough to recruit during the probation, albeit small probation.

7. Reinstalling hope & optimism throughtout campus for MSU football.

8. Making 3-8 unacceptable.

9. Burning the white band shoes of the previous regime.

10. Making sure the player's shoelaces don't untie during a game.

a few of those guys said publicly they would have jumped ship had Crooms stayed. I think going to a bowl game helped more than getting off probation. We were bowl eligible and everything else all but one year of probation. The lack of a few extra visits and a couple of scholly's didnt hurt recruiting near as much as that ****** offense he ran did. Crooms offense was his probation penalty

"I believe Croom when he says it was tough to recruit during the probation, albeit small probation." to say that that is especially true when you come on board with no clue about the time and effort involved in modern college football recruiting, refuse to recruit ANY JUCO players, and have the mindset that you can build an SEC caliber football team strictly off of the "diamond in the rough" kind of players that the top SEC teams aren't giving the time of day. Croom had to learn some hard lessons in all of these areas before his recruiting finally started improving. I would say the probation was only a minor part of his problem.

Gaping is an understatement. Like throwing a hot dog down a hallway into an ocean.

And I think the point there is that we had other D-linemen back ups that were as productive as Powe last year, so we wouldn't have missed much with him out.

Marshay Green might have made a difference, though he got picked on a lot early in the season, and he was pretty interchangeable with the rest of the corners until late in the year.

Losing Oher would've hurt. I don't know if we'd have played Sowell, or whether we'd have juggled the rest of our line to shift Harris or Miller over there, but that would've hurt some. Can't say how many wins it would've meant, but I wouldn't think more than maybe 1 or 2.

Which isn't to say you don't have talent there, especially with Russell coming in. But y'all need a solid QB more than anything. He doesn't have to set records, he just needs to be someone y'all can rely on to not put you in bad places.

and you are probably going off the Egg Bowl, when the entire team was in disarray. Tyson Lee was not our problem last year. He was actually a blessing in disguise.

But you see, Croom even screwed THAT up. He played him at the completely wrong times early in the season. Namely the Louisiana Tech game, where Croom's "gut" seemed to making the calls.
