And for the second time in a row, it is a kid who doesn't even have a profile yet.

5'11/180 athlete from a 2A School in LA. Devante Scott.

The coaches are great talent evaluators.

the 1985 Oklahoma Sooners in the Egg Bowl with Chris Freaking Relf as the QB.

I'm deferring to the coaching staff for now, until proven otherwise.

...because that says to me that the coaches actually think they're legit, otherwise they wouldn't accept the commitment. Now, ifthe unheard of players come at theend, thenIthink they probably suck.

You'd like to think that a stout 2A player in Louisiana is along the same lines as a stout 4A player in MS. Looking at his stats on scout, I'd say this is supposed to be our Percy Harvin type player.

It's when they are filling up spots at the end when you should worry.

That's my theory. It's when you see your coaches strike out on a player or two and then see some new names start to pop up that you know you're going for Plan B's. I doubt many coaches have committable offers on the table for Plan B guys yet.

If you sign up a guy at this point that's unheard of, and he turns out to suck, it's most likely just a misevaluation from your coaches rather than a Plan B situation.

For any staff to offer this early, they must see something they absolutely love about the player. This kid is apparently built like a tank for his size and very quick. There are some folks that say they saw him play and he was by far the best player on the field. Sounds like another LaDarius Perkins type player.

It is just odd that he wasn't even in the database yet. For all we know he could end up being a 3 or 4 star once Scout gets video, etc. or he could be a 2 star.

^^^^^^This is uber sheepish^^^^^^^

Seriously, what does classification have to do with it? If a good player is playing 2A ball, he's still just as good of a player. If a player sucks, he isn't any better by playing 5A ball.

I realize that the ratings tend to favor the major classification players more sometimes because they face better competition and therefore are easier to pick out, but at the end of the day a good player is a good player regardless of who he is playing against. You're more likely to find some diamonds in the rough in 2A ball, because those players will be more likely to fly under the radar, but that's about it.

ETA: Reply Fail on my part. Meant for this to be a reply to EClass.

They lost to Natchez, who I believe was a semi-finalist or quarterfinalist in 6A, by a touchdown. 2A in Louisiana is ridiculously tough, and they lost in the second round of the playoffs.

My comment was made based on the premise that when you look at the size of states like LA, TX, FL, and GA; their schools are usually much much larger than ours at all classifications. The size of a 2A high school in LA or TX in most cases would equal or surpass the size of a 4A high school in MS.......lending to the idea that a standout at a LA or TX 2A high school would most likely be a standout at a much higher classification in MS.That was the reasoning behind my original statement, but like many others have posted, the fact that the kid got an offer this early must mean that he's pretty good regardless. So, that in iteself is good enough for me.

Also, I know that if he's committed to us, it doesn't matter if he went to a 26A high school in LA and was player of the year because he still wouldn't be good enough to play at OM. ;)

It isludicrous that some Internet message board poster questions the whether a recruit should be offered because he does not have a "profle" on another Internet message board. Do you honestly believe that our coaching staff should wait for Scout.com to establish a profile for the recruit on their message board before the staff offers the recruit a scholarship? If you took the time to read the comments of the recruit's head coach said:

Mullen must be losing his iron-fisted grip on MS recruiting. They're all swimming to Nutt's boat.

And by the way douche, it is not "ludicrous that some Internet message board poster" questions anything. That is kind of what the whole thing is for...and the whole reason this site was started. The only thing that is absurd is your whole "the coaches know better than you" argument. No **** jackass.

But I am not going to rehash the whole stars/profile argument with you. I never said the kid was bad, I haven't seen any video on him - never seen him play a down. However, the top juniors in the southeast are all profiled for the most part, and many have star ratings already...there is a reason for that.

Oh, and if you would have "taken the time to read" my other post in this thread, you could see that I am not judging the kid at this point.

Just watch the scout video on the kid. If I had to compare him to anyone it would be Bump. Great hands, moves, and balance. If what his coach claims about his strength is true he might be quite a find! His coach says Scott can bench press 365 pounds and incline press 315 pounds.

Ferriday is the home of Mickey Gilley, Jimmy Swaggert and Jerry Lee Lewis, so if he sucks at football, maybe he could be a helluva entertainer.
