Football practice question

Having never played or coached football (except in video games), I have a question for someone who did: Can you explain the 9-on-7 drill? It keeps coming up in the interviews after practice, and I want to know what it is. I get that there are 9 players on one side of the ball, and 7 on the other, but which players are involved, and what skills are they working on? Thanks.

I'm not really sure myself, but I think there are 9 on offense (center, qb, fb, rb, te, and 4 receivers) and 7 on defense (3 lbs and 4 dbs). That is my educated guess at it.

9 on offense (center, qb, fb, rb, te, and 4 receivers)

(that only leaves 2 tackles or guards).

More likely it's 5 OL, 1 QB, 1 TE, 2 backs against the front seven (DL and LB).

especially if we're working on the running game/rush defense. 7 eligible recievers did seem a bit much.

no WR's ....no DB's...you run your inside run plays between the tackles...i'm sure we do this drill for half of practice each day

7 on 7 is a drill for passing attack and passing defense. On offense there is a qb, te or fb, rb, a center and 3 receivers and on defense its usually 3 lbs and 4 dbs. Sometimes there is 5 dbs and 2 lbs.</p>
