Football recruiting: consider this...

Last year's class had four 4 star prospects and seven three star prospects, according to Rivals. The rest (16 signees) were two star prospects.

This year's class, so far, has four 4 star commits and eight 3 star commits. There are ZERO two star recruits. Now, while I realize recruiting is subjective, it's interesting to compare the type of prospects we signed last season to this season's crop. The improvement is dramatic.

I hope we don't get caught up in rankings and such, but I do think it's reasonable to be excited about the improvement in our recruiting efforts.

Very true. At the very least, even for those that try to denounce the recruiting process, it should show that our coaching staff is beginning to do everything with a bit more urgency...

I still don't buy into the "stars" all that much. Especially with people like Gene "evaluating" them.

I will say that I do trust Croom and his judgement in general, because I know that he is looking for players that he can develop four, five years down the road.

Plus, it always seems like our highly rated classes usually end up being the class with only one or two guys that contribute the whole time that they are here.

You had a handful of 5 star guys and the rest was a mixed bag. The blue-chippers didn't work out, it left us with not much depth. Add to it the curse of the Arizona JC guys and you have a dangerous situation.

I'm not interested in how we end up ranking wise, I just want us to get a greater number of talented players, and not have to rely upon sleepers.

...with kids of high character, smarts, and athletic potential. Many of the "5 Stars" seem to have the "big head," and seem to be more self centered and don't buy into the team first concept very well. If you count the 5 stars we have had over the past 10 years, only two actually played like 5 stars, and that was Jerious Norwood and Derek Pegues.

I have always said something similar about QB recruiting, and I do think it applies to recruiting in general as well. Basically, what you really need is to land a class full of guys that have all the necessary tools to be D-1 athletes. If you can sign 25 guys with the size, speed, and athletic ability, you should be able to have enough of them pan out to have a pretty good team. Star rankings have some merit, but I wouldn't take them too seriously. As long as you're getting guys that have the potential to contribute, you're doing ok.
