For all of you counting Cord out, don't

First remember this his dad has been down this road and his family have no illusions about what life in the minors is all about. They know what kind of money it will take to get him to sign and that is first round money.

Second there is an MSU tie to his dad. His dad played at UF but he played juco ball with a former MSU all american, not a GP all american. Lets just say that they are comfortable with their kid at MSU.

Third Cord is a Plus hitter, but he is an outfielder. Outfielders are not generally big money guys in the draft unless they are extra special, those are few and far between. Clubs will usually spend money in this order, pitchers, catchers, infielders and if they dont pan out and can hit they will make an outfileder out of them, then outfielders.

Now that said a smaller market team may jump up and grab him but it aint likely, he has been scouted hard and will be again this year but I like the choice that Mullen and staff made here.

So then why do most of the people who cover recruiting for a living think he is going to play minor league baseball? Why do most people who are familiar with his situation say he is going pro? Why does he talk in interviews like he is going to play pro baseball?

Also, from what I've seen, he's projected "as high as a 3rd round pick" in the baseball draft. Odds of a 3rd through 5th round pick ever playing in the majors are 32%.

Those people are paid to write that is what they do and I don't know how well they know that family. And what else are he and his family going to say? If he can get himself into the first round or get that kind of money then good for him and his family. He can't shut it down and say I'm playing football and have any chance of improving his draft stock.

From what I've read....

he'll go pro if he gets the money he's looking for but play college if he doesn't. They say he's looking for first round money, which is certainly a possibility, so we'll just have to wait this one out.

I thought he was a pitcher? Regardless, it worked out well for Clemson having their stud QB play outfielder. I have no problem with it as long as Cohen understands where his scholarship lies.

This guy scares the crap out of me. I just can't understand someone who is willing to drop either sport completely. Does he even like football? I've read that if he comes to MSU he probably won't play baseball.

Side note- if he does get 3rd/4th round money, can he/will he do an Alford deal? I wouldn't think Mullen would be ok with that one bit.

We'll have to wait on the cross checkers to evaluate him this Spring- and they will advise the club if he worth moving up. If he is a solid mid-3rd round pick and they are telling scouts it will take 1st round money to sign him- then he will drop in the draft. If he is legit and someone they feel could slide up to early 3rd or even late to mid 2nd round- then they will spend the coin. Also, WHO drafts him is a big deal- big difference in the Yankees drafting him than the Pirates, Royals, or Marlins

We simply have to wait until the draft and see where he goes.

Golson was an outfielder who was drafted much lower than Cord, but was still offered a bonus over $1.5 million. Not counting him out completely, but he will likely have to turn down a great big ol' sack-o-coin to stay.

Golson was not offered over $1.5m, it was closer to $1.2m. The Bears inflated the dollar amount. 3
That is still a nice chuck of change though.

Golson was drafted under the old draft rules. I dont know the difference other than players arent getting as much money as they used too.

I believe the rule is clubs get X amount of dollars to spend in the first X amount of rounds. If they offer a player any amount and he doesn't sign, the money is lost and can't be spent on the remaining players in those rounds.

This has resulted in high risk guys, football players and guys with strong college baseball ties, not getting very large offers.

I honestly don't think it will matter though. He's been pretty vocal (newspapers, Mullen quotes, the works) that if he gets offered his requested amount of money he's signing. It could just come down to who else the club who drafts him also drafts.

Exactly, if Golson was drafted in same slot now he would not have gotten near the offer he got then.

^this

and the league recommends the offer per spot in the draft and gets kinda ornery if a club pays above the recommended rate.

problem is, anything up to 10 rounds will be six-figure money. It's easier to ride from town to town with few hundred thousand dollars in the bank account.

For the record, I'd love to see Sandberg play both sports at tMSU. Screw the "he has to concentrate on one sport" ********. Unless we're willing to recruit brothers of top notch athletes, adopt homeless 6'6", 320 lb. waifs off the streets, or employ MSU coed and local Starkville Ho-bags in the Athletic department, we need something to lure 4 and 5-star athletes to The Mississippi State University.

Round 1
1. Carlos Correa - 4.8million
20. Chris Stratton - 1.85million
31. Brian Johnson - 1.5 million

Under the labor deal, agreed to in November, the recommended slot value for the top pick was $7.2 million. The values of the slots for a team's picks in the first 10 rounds are added up, and teams exceeding their totals are penalized with a tax and possibly the loss of future draft picks. All selections are limited to minor league contracts.

3rd round
1. (96) Brady Rodgers - 495,200
125th Zach Green - 420,000

If he wants 1st round money, with the new agreement it would seem to me that he has to go in the 1st or top of 2nd round to even have a chance. 3rd round money is a lot so he could change his mind, i guess. I don't know or his family's situation, but I do remember most teams only drafted close to slot last year and sometimes teams pass because they think it will be hard to sign such and such a pick.

this is in no way shape or form the same as golson, he was drafted in 2011 ...then new bargaining agreement went in after.

If he does go the baseball route, there is a chance it may not work out. We could have one of those 22 year old freshman QBs ala Weeden.

I agree Mutt. Offer incentives we could be comfortable with and that should be one even for ***.
