has a conference ever decided to dissolve? For example, the four corner schools decide to leave the Pac-12 and the PNW schools decide to bolt for the Big X - could the members simply vote to dissolve the Pac-12 before announcing their departure?

Yes they can dissolve the conference. Even with GOR. Half the conference will gone. But I think they merge with MWC teams of Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and UNLV. They might even take Colorado State. Getting into Vegas would be a plus for PAC survive the mess but would not get that huge contract they thought they would.
