For anyone wishing Matt Rhule as next HC

But that misses the entire point. Why would Penn State fire a guy who was unable to break through a ceiling only to hire a guy who has been unable to break through an even lower ceiling?

Stated in context of Franklin's poor record against top-10 teams versus Rhule's poor record against top-25 teams. This is precisely spot on by a writer who covers the Huskers.

Heh. "Spot on" in the sense that Rhule now has Nebraska at 5-1 and ranked (#25 in AP poll). I think Nebraska doesn't want to lose him.

That was my knock of Franklin, that he couldn't beat top SEC competition at Vandy. "Oh, but it's Vandy," all the Franklin guys said. "Imagine what he could do with Penn State resources." Now we know.

I could say the same of Rhule, except that as a HC, he turned around Temple, Baylor, and now Nebraska, all in short order. Yeah, he flamed out with Carolina, but so did Saban and Meyer with their respective NFL teams.

While I understand the Franklin firing, still have this odd thought about being careful what you wish for in the back of my brain.
100% get it but not trying to get better is excruciating. Like your kid making some money, lives in your basement, and buys a M3 “cause he can afford the monthly”

Rhule seems like the top candidate, but Penn State fans expectations seem too high

You act like the asks at Temple/Baylor/Nebraska were the same as the ask is here. They're not asking the next coach to turn around a program. They're asking the next coach to build on 10+ win seasons with wins against top ten teams and deep runs in the post season. Nothing on Rhule's resume shows he has an aptitude for that.

Franklin has as many top 25 wins in the last 12 months as Rhule has in his entire career. More top 10 wins in the last 12 months than Rhule has in his entire career. If 3 point wins over Cincinnati and Maryland and losing to a mediocre Michigan team this year are indicative of successfully turning things around in short order then Franklin's achievements are absolutely otherworldly by comparison.

I'd argue hiring Rhule isn't trying to get better, he's change for change's sake. Dismissing Franklin to hire another coach with the same glaring deficiency is just a poor hire.

There are plenty of other options out there to roll the dice on.

Did Rhule lose to an 0-4 UCLA or Northwestern?

Unfortunately, I can see the potential for a scenario to play out in which the next head coach will not be the guy who improves on what Franklin did, but more probably the coach after the next guy. If PSU hires Matt Rhule, then I think that greatly increases the likelihood of such a scenario.

He may have plateaued, but Franklin did a lot of good for Penn State, and it will take a very talented coach to improve on what he did. It can be done, but they are going to really have to hit a home run with this hire.
So you think the next guy will go 1-18 vs top 5 and 4-21 vs top 10 because that is how bad they would have to be to not improve on what Franklin did. Franklin was also 3-4 vs NW but I do think he may have been undefeated vs Purdue....hooray!

So is the new measure of success moving forward going to be being better than whatever 2025 ends up being or exceeding what the program accomplished in 2022/23/24?

What it sounds like your saying is that this year is setting a new standard and as long as we do better than this season you're cool.

I'm sorry, but you don't blow 50 million dollars in buyout money for Matt Ruhle.

If Franklin left...sure. But if you're gonna blow that kinda cash you better darn well have something bigger than that planned.

At this point I will assume Cignetti is staying in Bloomington. In this order of likelihood based on the goal of getting to the next level, this is my list - Brady (really believe he is the clear number one), Stein (there is clear precedent for this working), Golesh (Cignetti potential), Campbell (more stability, potential to achieve more with the resources of PSU), Key (rising star, high potential, current hc experience so no training wheels necessary), Sumrall (rising star, if not this job will be in the sec next season), Diaz and Rhule (in both cases we are settling, but they do bring a stability in terms of likely 8-10 wins per year.)
Who is the best recruiter and developer of QBs between Stein, Brady, Key and Sumrall? Which one of those guys could best develop physical, tough line play?

Stein and Brady would bring highly elevated qb play and high powered offenses. The other two have current hc experience snd are rising stars. Tough to say who would develop best OL. Brady has the best experience running offense in bad weather!

I don't want an athletic, finesse team. We need a guy who will instill physicality and toughness. Franklin could not do that.

For those desiring Joe Brady: let me put my two cents in. I am also a Bills fan and what I have seen from him is some skill, however, given the issues we have seen with AK ( jet sweeps, cutesy stuff), the same crap has happened with Brady. Mysteriously the Bills #1 back and one of the best in the league, was on the sidelines when the going got tough. Hmmm, sound familiar? Also a tendency to run jet sweeps when you need a first down and even McDermott calling Brady’s calls “cutesy”. No thanks, I don’t need to keep seeing that.Give me Manny and a solid OC hire any day.

I'll take Ruhle if we can't get him and Campbell has to be on the short list.
Rumor has it there are only 5 coaches on the list none being pro coaches and if need be they would pay Cignetti his asking price. (RUMORE HAS IT) Five imo is a very short list.

I like Manny, but let’s face it. He is a lateral move at best vs Franklin defensive coach and will not develop quarterbacks like a Stein or Brady will.
Speaking of Brady, his playcalling is a bit curious st times this season. Overall his body of work does include qb development and strong offenses.

Brady had Joe Burrow in college and has Josh Allen now. I don’t see either of those guys on our current roster.
