but I'll give you the gist, and I believe it more tonight after seeing our defense against a real team. Put Lee on the bench, put Relf in, and let's build for the future. He has the physical tools, time to take our lumps with him and go forward.

work the 2 QB system and score as many as we can this season. Offensively, we are ok and can make enough noise to show improvement.
Let Relf slowly get better. Relf is not getting to be any better next year because he might play 200 extra snaps this season. He needs practice and lots of it. And that will only come with time.

Defense is going to dampen otherwise high spirits of a rebuilding year. We got to get a better DC and more players on D. We need about 4 juco's to come in and help shore up some areas.

to do what he wants to do, sorry, but that's the way of life, otherwise their would be more QB's.

Well, I agree we just need to go with Relf as the starter/majority of snaps. However, if he is the QB of the future......that doesn't say much about Russell. Relf's future is playing the role that Kodi Burns fills at AU.

Just needs more time Croom34? If he needs practice, how about quit splitting the reps there between him and Lee?

he just needs to keep working in practice on footwork and making throws. That is going to come with time. We are a better offense with both he and Lee playing. He will get tons and tons of reps this Spring when its just him and Russell. Hopefully Newton is here and we wont have to worry about Relf.

We are better on offense. I'm pleased with the progress. I think some defensive suggestions would be more in order tonight.

Mullen thinks he is going to get Newton. Newton will be our QB if he steps on campus

And what difference does it make if we are this terrible defensively? We aren't going to kill Lee's draft status. Let's get as ready for next year as we can, and at the same time, give ourselves the best chance to win.

I also think Lee limits the play calling. Can't call all of those designed runs and such with him in there, he'd get killed.

You play Relf simply because even though its not that great, his passing ability is better than Lee's running ability.

and he also can make some throws while handing off to Dixon. Relf is slowly coming along and he may actually be able to handle alot more of the offense by November. But right now, I say keep playing both. As much as Lee limits playcalling, so does Relf with what he can handle.

shows you how good Russell is...Russell doesnt fit how Mullen likes to run his offense. Depending on who we sign at QB, Russell may never start a game at QB for MSU

I was going to say that Relf should play more- until he threw that second INT. The fact of the matter is Relf makes too many unwise decisions- like forcing the ball into coverage and making wild pitches on the option when nothing is there.

Lee's biggest problem is his size. He just can't see over the freaking line, but at least he takes care of the ball for the most part.

But as Relf develops this year, I do think we should, and will see him play more- and eventually start.

All MSU has to do is find a quarterback, more receivers, offensive linemen, defensive backs, and a defensive coordinator. Once they take care of that, they should win some games. Hopefully whoever the coach is 5 or 6 years from now, in the middle of the umpteenth rebuilding season at MSU, will be able to recruit them.

I hope Russell turns out to be the greatest QB ever but he hasn't proven anything yet. Until he proves himself we need to get Newton and any other highly rated QB that wants to come. Even if Russell does pan out we still need more good QBs.

Is that we do land Newton, which will take care of the QB, and I think he will help the o-line and the receivers, both of which will be more experienced next year.

That hope is reasonably realistic.

My other hope is that Mullen cans Torbush.

I'm not sure how realistic that is, though. I hope he proves me wrong.

I think the 2 Qb is working fine right now and gives us the best chance to win right now. This team needs some wins right away if they can get them. The defense is the problem. I think next week we face a tough defense and average O. Let's see what happens. By the end of the year, Relf may be taking more snaps and this is a more conservative/better way of developing Relf.

...and you wrote this before the game tonight? Somehow you could magically tell against Jackson State that our defense would suck? Lee is the better passer and more stable player, Relf is the better athlete and runner. They both need to play. There is no reason to talk about making changes to the offense. Why don't you write a "Fire Torbush" column?

I wrote it on Thursday, and now after seeing how bad our defense is and any hope of 5+ wins going out the window with it, I think we should just sit Lee because he doesn't help us long or short term.

Lee is the better passer. If you consider having to roll out every time to see over somebody's head better, then you are right. I'd rather take my chances with the superior athlete.

Why do they both need to play? What difference does it make if we are going to give up 30 points and 500 yards a game, which is very feasible considering some of the teams we have left to play.

....you don't not concede the season after starting out 1-1 with one bad defensive effort. Of course, you admitted that you wrote a column advocating that we concede the season after a 45-7 home win. That is ridiculous.

And not that it matters, but Coach and most of the rest of the people on this board agree with me. And I think most of the rest of the folks who want to play Relf exclusively think it's because he gives us the best chance to win, not because "we just need to take our lumps and get ready for next year."

Relf does give us the best chance to win, and it does help us long term as well. Michael Scott would call that a "win-win-win".
