The Braves had the overall #1 draft pick after the 1990 season. The Braves wanted to draft a high school pitcher out of Texas, Todd Van Poppel. But, the Braves were historic losers at the time and Van Poppel told the Braves that if they drafted him #1, he would sign with the University of Texas. So the Braves passed on Van Poppel and went with Jones.
Van Poppel was then drafted and signed by the Oakland A's in the 1st round - 14th overall pick. That was probably the worst mistake the Van Poppel ever made. The Braves then turned it around in 1991 and won a ****-load of division titles.
