The Repubs went too far right (maga) and got "corrected".......now the Dems will go too far left (socialism) and eventually reap what they sow also. The first party to realize governing somewhere near the "middle" is the way to go will be in office an extended period . Oh well wash, rinse, repeat
Hopefully the middle will be achieved one day but at my age…..I doubt I will see it.[/QUOTE]

The politicians in each party that are closer to the middle are the first ones to go during midterm elections. The crazies in safe seats at the ends of their parties will always be there.

I am curious if there is an example in history where the was a such a direct correlation between the specific actions of the President and a subsequent change in control of Congress. I think the Republicans lost seats after Watergate, but I think they were already in the minority. The Democrats took full control in 2008, but that was partly due to financial crisis. The Iraq war being a quagmire did not help, but that is not the only reason for the election results.

Most of the House of Reps that were elected yesterday will be swept away in two years because they will go on a suicidal retribution campaign of their own.

Yep. GOP was able to ride high for some long periods of time by putting all their eggs in the Trump basket for over a decade. Problem with making your platform "whatever Trump says" is when it crashes, it crashes hard.

I'm anxious to see if they try to get back to attempting to be a consistent conservative party focused on economic basics or if they double down and try to find a Trump imitator to continue the grievance and own the libs path.

Also have little confidence that democrats focus on pushing meaningful legislation that could get through with a veto override while they have control and Don is still in office. They'll probably focus their energies on investigations that have little shot at going anywhere and passing symbolic legislation that has no chance of a signature and override. That said, itwill be interesting to see how war powers and tariffs issues are handled for the next 2 years though. It's going to be very tough to support those politically going forward.

Here's a thought provoking article concerning interest rates and the capital demand. We all want cheaper goods and lower interest rates but it's going to get harder for the Fed to influence these things.

Not much is going to happen right now. You have democrats controlling the legislature with a Republican president. It’s going to be deadlock essentially. The senate flipping is the bigger deal for whoever is president in 28.
My entire politically involved life I’ve been of the opinion that Congress and the White House should be controlled by different parties to minimize negative impact. If we elected people whose stated goal and actual behavior was to find common ground for the greater good this would be a good plan. Given that you can only get elected if you pay homage to your political identity and never compromise none of it works anyway.

If the Democrats walk down the petulant child retribution trail to match Trump they will be punished. If they actually try to behave like adults and legislate maybe we get some stability or normal political bickering.

As usual, the losing party got what they deserved. They mistook the Dems running maybe the worst 2 candidates in the history of presidential elections against their awful candidate in his own right as a mandate for that candidate and the batshit crazy wing of their party. In a few years the other party will make the same mistake about what this election was really about and take as their own mandate.

It was always destined to end this way when the Republicans allowed Trump to get the nomination in 2016. The only question was exactly when it would end this way. The Republicans just are not as organized and disciplined as the Democrats. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, & Pete Buttigieg were the far left crazies in 2020 just like Trump was the far right crazy in 2016. The Democrats blew up the process to guarantee that at least a perceived moderate Biden would get the nomination. The Republicans failed miserably to do the same to Trump in 2016. The MAGA Cult is as dangerous as the Democrat Socialist Cult. It may take a generation to rebuild the Republican party.

This is why I'm pro term limits and getting the corp money out of campaigning. The founders certainly built in moderating checks to the system. Big change wasn't ever meant to happen fast outside of a loud mandate where the house, senate, and White House are all controlled by the same party. Even then....courts. It's just hard for there to be sweeping fast changes in our system and that's much different than in many other countries. I like that about our system bc voters are emotional and we don't make good decisions all of the time.

So in the ideal world, our elected reps should be seeking compromise for the good of the country in this system of moderation, checks, and balances.
But that assumes they want to actually be productive - which I think the founders thought would be the case given the checks built in. What they didn't anticipate was the corporate money and desire to be reelected for decades corrupting these offices. We've allowed the offices to be a mechanism for personal profit instead of a civic contribution. Shame on us. We have to fix that part.

Can we repeal the 17th Amendment? The Senate would be far more moderate if that amendment had never passed. The House was supposed to be the crazy chamber while the Senate the more cool-headed chamber. Now they're both crazy.

and the democrats took a beating the past several elections.

The Republican Party has fallen over its self trying to give the president more and more power just because it was their guy. That goes against literally the central platform of being a conservative. Am I saying the democrats are good? Hell no. But this isn’t an 80’s cartoon where one side is the bad guys and the other is the good guys. Both sides suck. I am hoping that the *** whooping the democrats took 2 years ago woke them up and that the *** whooping the republicans took last night woke them up. Otherwise, we are F’d.

There will never be a tyrant leader of America because of the system of government we have. There are elections every couple of years to check each party. Believe me, if there was to be a tyrant leader of this country, it would be Donald Trump, because that's what he aspires to be.
