how did our defense look? Highlights and lowlights showed the Directional Louisiana School had alot of uncontested outside shots. Truth?

I thought the second team came in the first half and scrapped pretty hard. Benock in particular played pretty good D. He had a couple of steals that led to points. It seemed like Bost was getting beat alot for some reason. SELA did have a few wide open looks but not like Rider did. Several of their shots were of the RAT variety with a hand in their face from 23 feet out. Rick said on the post game that SELA was came into the game shooting 50% from the three point line and averagin around 100 pts/game in their first two games so I would give our defense a B. Also, number 4 for SELA reminded me alot of Charles Rhodes. He was a big guy that was deadly from about 12-15 ft. THose guys are always tough to guard.

Luckily for us they missed a lot of those shots, unlike Rider the other night. Low post defense was much improved from last Friday. Overall glad we won, but our perimeter D has a long way to go.

we badly need another big guy who can play. The Rider game was lost when Jarvis wasn't on the floor. Lewis is good for a freshmens but should only be doing mop-up duty at this point. And, those are all we've got right now. Riek, Elgin, and/or even Sidney would make this a complete team.

last night. We both agreed for this team to be "good" we have to get Sidney in (which I don't think will happen) or Riek/Elgin has to step up big time. Getting Kodi back and possibly playing at least 25 minutes, hopefully more, will definately help.

seems like the majority of the time, we would walk/jog down the court while they were shoot threes. not impressed with our defense at all.

but I don't see anyway Riek is a meaningful contributor this year. Some of you have never seen the guy play and are assuming because he was once a lottery projection, he will get instant minutes. Not true. The guy is awkward and can barely run. He MIGHT be good for about 2-3 minutes and 2-3 fouls a game. Right now, I'd rather have Wendell Lewis out there.

With as much as Stansbury talks about defense, I've so far seen some pretty lackluster effort on the part of the defense in terms of hustle down the court. Just doesn't seem like they really want to run to the ball on defense, and that if they mess up its ok because Jarvis is there to save them. I'm not quite sure on this, but I don't think we have any fastbreak points yet this year. Thats one thing we really have to get better at. It just seems like this team, especially when defending the perimeter, doesn't mind letting the opposing team take a 3, or drive to the hole and hope Jarvis gets a block or adjusts the guys shot. The offense will start to come around once we start getting more hustle and more activity on the defensive side to help create turnovers and fast break points.</p>

He is definitely a bit awkward. I do think he will give us about 10-15 minutes a game and take up alot of space. He will be a project but lets not forget that he is a freshman. By the time he is a senior I think he will be a pretty decent player if not a star.

I don't see him being any better than Varnado was his FR year, and I think that's a best case scenario for him this year. He's a long-term project that has the potential to turn out as good (or maybe even better) than Varnado has, but just as much chance to never really contribute for us.

he plays 10-15 min. with Varnado on the team. I think he will be a 2-3 min. guy and if he plays more, it's because SWAT is in foul trouble.

he can't be any worse than Lewis. I mean hell he does nothing on offense (even missed a dunk I believe last night), and hasn't impressed on defense. To his credit he is a freshman, and he will go through this. But at least Riek will give us some sort of a defensive presence down low while JV is on the bench. I don't expect ethier one to score unless on they just happen to grab a offensive rebound and somehow stick it back in. I think all here know Riek is a project, but his potential is much higher than Wendell Lewis.

I'm not saying hes Hasheem Thabeet, but if we can cross the language barrier, and get Riek to lose some weight and get more mobile up and down the court, he can have the same effect. Doesn't have to score alot, but an intimidating guy down low that will alter alot of shots and get his share of blocks. We have Osby and Dee for 2 more years. A Dee, Osby, Riek nucleus is a good one that we can build around, especially if Riek can become as dominant as he was 2 years ago, and if we can sign 1 or 2 guys from this 2011 basketball class.

I just know when Jarvis is out, we're not good anymore. No surprise. We just need somebody so that Lewis doesn't have to play 10 min/ game. I think we'd be a much more effective team if he and Riek could split those minutes.
