Football is all about scheme. Defensive coaches develop schemes that thwart offensive strengths. It's the UK defensive scheme that seems to be inferior this season. Teams with various levels of offensive talent have no problems scoring points on this defense. Is every team more talented? No, not at all. Our kids simply don't follow their assignments and routinely get beat to the end zone. To me, that's a sign of poor coaching.
Football is about preparation. UK prepares well Monday thru Friday. On most occasions, the team play in the first half is adequate. However, after lining up for a half or sometimes for a quarter of the game, the opponents clearly adjust to certain physical and schematic mismatches that allow them to compete at a higher level. Suddenly, UK is overmatched and failing to compete. The UK staff routinely fails to adjust to the opponents altered gameplan and the scoreboard explodes. This is poor coaching.
I firmly believe that the talent level is similiar to what we've seen in years past. There are no Woodyards and Trevathians on this team, but the talent level is adequate to compete. What is lacking is motivation and the desire to compete for 60 minutes a game. Do the players experience individual "moments of clarity" during these games and quit competing? It's been suggested that this is the case. It's the HC's job to instill a unified confidence amongst his coaches and players. How does this positive attitude evaporate so quickly every Saturday? One reason may be poor coaching.
Like others, I have enjoyed the improved recruiting, the immense investments in facilities, and the better branding of our football program, but where is the follow through? It's meaningless if the the ship's captain and crew can't navigate across the broad sea.
I've seen other coaches win here at UK with arguably inferior talent. Yes, they had better QB's which are essential at UK, but in four years this staff has underdeveloped good athletes at that position.
This program HAS TO HAVE a solid HC to progress up the ladder in this league. So, what does the Stoops' record tell us? His roster, his staff (adjusted several times over), his coaching and game planning have lead us to what conclusions after 35 games?
Now, the fan base has lowered itself to a new low of innuendo and rumor mongering regarding the head man. At the same time, game announcers question the direction the team is going and ridicule the level of play.
How many more signs does an AD need to see that the program is failing in a monumental way?
