For those who think Southern Miss is a win

Next year. You may want to think again. They are getting ready to play WKU for their conference championship and has a Junior quarterback who has thrown for 3900 yards 35 TDs and a 64% completion rate. I know nothing else about them other than their Quarterback will be better than our Quarterback come the first game of the season. Next season could get ugly quickly!!

I wish we had a QB that could throw for 3900 yards and 35 TDs.

I consider Southern Miss to be a winnable game, but certainly not a gimme game.

I didn't come up with this. Ganner in another thread said;

Southern Miss graduates 2 starting WRs, their starting RB, 2 starting OL, and no one on 2nd string offense. 5 defensive starters and 1 2nd stringer graduate.

I never thought it was a sure win. I was shocked when I saw it on the schedule as our opener.

They will not beat us soundly...if we played the teams they play Towles would have had those numbers as well along with 40 picks but gawdy numbers as well

I will expect a loss and be pleasantly surprised with a Win.......Actually outside of Austin Peay next year, that is how I will view every game.

You don't think we have a shot against New Mexico State? [winking]

Outside of Nebraska and Miss St their schedule was terrible. They lost at home to Miss St and lost to Nebraska. They also lost to Marshall by 3 TDs

They beat 1 team with a winning record. All of the other wins were against terrible teams with losing records. Their record is over inflated because of their schedule.

After this year's finish. If UK were to lose to Southern Miss then go to Florida and get spanked, starting off 0-2, I'd say Stoops would find himself in a hole that would be close to impossible to dig himself out of.

And we did the exact same thing. One win against a team with a winning record (EKU). All of the other wins were against terrible teams with losing records.

When you look at their roster, they have very few Seniors. Starters noted above in earlier post. I think it'll be a tough game. They have had a good program for years. Wouldn't surprise me if they beat us.

Question is will they have the same coach next year or will he move on to greener pastures?

From 1982 to 1999 Ul was 2-14 against USM, including our only loss in the 10-1-1 Fiesta Bowl year. Brett Favre was their quarterback during that stretch and he had one amazing win against Louisville where we had them beat and he heaved up a hail Mary pass that bounced sideways off somebody's head and right into the hands of an open receiver who won the game on that play.

They've traditionally been a serious mid major football school that likes to start the year against a big name opponent and they usually play them tough.

They were always a serious opponent until they hired Ellis Johnson to replace Larry Fedora. Johnson took a team that went 12-2 in 2011 and didn't win a game with them in 2012. So the 3 years they've been rebuilding from that catastrophe. But it looks like they're back.

You guys should be able to beat them but be ready for some hard nosed football. They aren't a cupcake.

Didn't realize it took 'ol Brett that long to get out of college. Glad he had the NFL to fall back on 'cause doubt if his degree would have been worth much

Stop letting facts get in the way of good old Stoops/UK bashing.
I'm not bashing UK or Stoops. Hope he turns it around to where we're a contender each and every game. I was just saying that I think S. Miss will be a lot tougher than our normal season opening opponent. And, I wouldn't overlook them at all.

In light of the Southern Miss-WKU game today, thought I'd give this thread a bump (BTW, WKU just took the lead as I started this reply.)

Anyway, while I'm not motivated to research SM's roster and coaching staff to determine who they have coming back, Stoops, staff and players had better be on red alert to start the 2016 season. A loss to SM would set a very bad tone to start the season.

Plus I think I read on a post here a week or so ago (haven't looked at the schedule) that our second game in at Florida. Not sure. But starting 0-2...the wheels could come off the season. Let's hope not.

I know of no one who thinks Southern Mississippi is an automatic win. We should win, but nothing is ever guaranteed.
I think we'll be fired up for the first game of next year. If we had Southern Miss to play next week, though, they'd probably smoke us.
