I bought some Cleveland Hi-bore irons today and played without hitting them first...took 12 strokes off my game...might be beginners luck, but i dont usually knock it within 15 feet of the stick from the rough 195 yards out with a 6....they hit long too- 140 and in I had to use PW...its like hitting every shot with a 5 wood

Its amazing how much fun today's round was when i'm able to hit it where I want it to go...cant wait to play again

but it's not uncommon to play a lot better the first time with new clubs. I always do. I guess it's placebo effect usually.

Don't worry reality will kick back in...

The symptoms you have described, come under the heading of one of those days... (could **** in a swinging jug)
...unless you were previously using really ****** clubs.

So, it took 12 strokes off your game? However you were hitting PW from 140 and a 6 iron 195? I'm assuming the first two times you were in that situation you flew the green by 15-20 yards or so? Must have cut some strokes off on getting up and down there to cut 12 strokes off. Most people would think that was an anomaly and try the same club again but you figured out right away the exact yardage your new clubs provided? Forgive me if I don't believe that.

the club had never felt as good in my hand as it did with them...no need to hit them, I knew I was going to hit the ball better...hopefully the accuracy will continue

I left myself in many fewer bad situations, even being a little long a few times...

for example- par 3's for me are usually an automatic 5 or more- today not the case. 6 iron from 185 with 10 feet...hitting the green makes a huge difference I found out (and yes, I really like my new 6 iron)

I'll go play with a rental set, and you can have your shiny new irons... Any time, any course...

If you improved by 12 strokes in one round there is only one explanation... You, sir, are a hacker... Hope you enjoyed breaking 90 for the first time!

P.S. I'd like to request that we have the first annual SPS golf tourney asap! DS are you listening?

Nobody here asked you to play them in a round of golf.

Nobody asked you how good you were.

Is that suppose to be impressive? Ive hit my 9 iron 190 10 feet from the pin on a Par 3 in Hilton Head, SC to win a bet with the
course attendant and the 3 others in my group.......I average 285-295 with my 3 wood off the tee (cant hit my driver)......i grew up playing with blades and just recently purchased wedges and there is definitely a difference

Average golfers don't hit their 6 iron 195...kudos to you if you can hit a 9 iron 190

Sorry if I'm missing the sarcasm, but averaging 295 with a 3 wood? Ain't no way. Bubba Watson, the current longest hitter on tour and one of the longest hitters in PGA tour history doesn't hit his 3 wood 295, so I find this a little hard to believe. Not saying that it's impossible, but averaging that distance is something completely different.

As far as Coach goes, if you took 12 strokes off your game in one round, my guess is that you shoot around 100-110 on average. If that's the case, you typically have a lot more wrong with your game than a set of clubs. Nonetheless, golf is a lot about confidence so congrats with your new sticks. Also, if you really did hit a 6 iron from the rough at 195 yards, that is pretty impressive to anyone other than Tiger.

A lot of manufacturers have lowered the lofts, making one feel they are hitting it further. A nine iron today is more like a 8.5 iron. But it does make an old fart like me feel like I'm not losing distance. :)

not anywhere close to a pro....just been playing since i was bout 12 years old.....typically hit in the mid to high 80's....iron game suffers from 140 yards in....distance control is horrible....well my three wood is all i hit off the tee, driver is in the garage....i cannot hit the oversize heads since I grew up with the real woods, so my 3 weed (which is in need of repair due to snapping the head off a couple of weeks ago teeing off on)......

Was this your first time to play this spring?

Two things could be happening here. Number one, it is the first time playing with a new set of clubs and that is usually worth a few strokes. Number two, it was the first time you have played this year. For some reason, and this is true with the guys I play with also, the first time back out is usually a good round. You are amazed at how well you played. Problem is that the true hacker that you (and me) are will show back up in a few rounds.

I have done the same thing taking a demo set out and playing great. After buying them and playing a few rounds it becomes obvious that it was not the clubs that I replaced that were the problem. It was the no talent hack, swinging them. I wish you luck. Also if you knocked that many strokes off of your game we should get together. I think I am equally as bad.

Yes, it is supposed to be impressive.
You AVERAGE 290 with your 3wd? ********. Maybe in the mountains of Colorado or some ****.

And what the hell are you talking about you just bought wedges? You somehow played golf without wedges? What did you use from 120 in?...a 9iron and just push it forward little by little?
Congrats on entering the 1930s with your purchase of wedges for the first time...30 more years and you may start using CAVITY BACKS.

played 2 weeks ago in Dallas. I am a 95-100 golfer. I have always been able to hit the ball a long way, but no idea where it was going. But I have been able to putt fairly well on a consistent basis. And yes, I have always found my best round to be the first one of the year. Shot 94 two weeks ago, and 88 yesterday on a harder course. And that 88 could have easily been a 83-84..lost a few strokes getting used to the new irons on the front side

These irons just feel so much better in my hands than anything I've played with before. Being a little heavier makes the difference to me. I hit the ball where i wanted it to go for a change. To be able to putt for an eagle is a big deal to someone that shoots 98 with regularity.

All i'm doing is passing along info to other hacks out there that it might help them as well. I'd suggest hitting with some and make your own decision.

I don't hit the ball very far. I might average 245 with a driver on a good day. I could try and hit it harder and further but whats the point when you dont know where its going.

I hit my drives 290 to 300 and I am pretty accurate with my driver. But, I can walk up to a drive with 120 left to the hole and have no damn clue where my iron shot is going. I cannot hit my irons worth a damn. I have always wanted to take some lessons and try to get that straightened out but never have.

I know with me it is not the arrow, it is the indian shooting it.

you should all know that the "irons" he bought are hybrids. That is why he hit them much farther. If you all bought a set of hybrids you'd hit them 20-40 yards longer per club too.

Coach, while I'm glad you've found a set you're confident in and you play better with, know that eventually there is a ceiling (floor I guess for golf) regarding how much better you can play with those. Eventually you will need something that will provide a lot more spin to set the ball down in tighter spots or stop the ball on a shorter chip shot.

By the way, I love hybrids. Mostly because I can't hit a wood for **** except off a tee. I have a 3 hybrid and no woods in my bag. I'd love to get a 2 hybrid.

and you can hit a 9-iron 190 yards, then it's no wonder that you have distance control problems. There's not a club in the bag for you for shots between 100-150. One thing I do know from years of playing is that you can teach a lot of things in golf, but hitting the ball that far isn't one of them. If you're knocking a 3-wood close to 300, you could be a hell of a golfer with a few lessons.

I've always been pretty good at sports, except golf. I just want to be able to shoot in the low 80's consistently. I've had people with work me some, but never an actual "lesson". It just pisses me off to no end to drive a ball 300 yards and then end up with a double on the hole.

I've got more time to play now, and hopefully can get more consistent</p>

Oh yeah I used to be the same way. Now 150 and in is the strongest part of my game. It just takes a lot of work and practice. I went to the driving range and would not take the driver or any long clubs and take my time working on shots. Lots of people just go and hit one ball after another without really thinking about what they are doing or where its going.

I can knock the **** out of the ball off the tee if I want to, but I'd rather sit it down 260-275 and play my irons, especially on the shorter courses. I'll go for 300+ on the par 5's, but I'm much less accurate.

But my best part of my game is my 6-iron and in. I can put any of those clubs on the green almost every time, especially my SW from 110 in.

Hybrids are the way to go. I put 2 of them in my bag replacing the 3 and 4 iron. I quit using a 2 iron long ago using a 5 wood instead. I can see myself replacing the 5 iron one day, but I do like 6 irons on down.
