In 2008, the East St. Louis featured one of the best receiving combinations in the country in Terry Hawthorne and Kraig Appleton, who helped the Flyers claim the Class 7A state championship.
On Thursday, Appleton was arrested in connection with the Monday shooting and death of a 41-year-old East St. Louis woman.
Hawthorne and Appleton both earned D-I scholarships.
Hawthorne to Illinois, where he played for four years for the Illini. Appleton, who also was a state champion in the hurdles, went to Wisconsin, where I doubt he made it into January of his freshman year before being kicked off or leaving the team.
Appleton's been in and out of trouble since leaving school. He was shot multiple times in 2011.
