Charlotte has never had true open enrollment, and you have to sit 365 if you leave a magnet and go to another school that's not your home school that has space or another magnet school. Nothing like Forsyth county. Charlotte has zones, and most of the top football schools are non-magnets, and classified as full so the only way you can attend is by moving into their district. Thus all the residency issues.

Great coaching is key. HS football has drastically changed. Its more regional.
I know Charlotte's never had true open enrollment.

Butler learned last year going to DC, unless it is a bordering state it doesn't help your RPI.
To my knowledge that was the first time Butler went out of state to play an opponent. That team was nationally ranked in some polls and last year was one of the weaker Butler teams we fielded. Not saying Butler would win but Butler traditionally is better than what they showed. I think Butler will be really good the next couple of years because their impact players are all sophomores, I would love to see them test themselves out of state.

In regards to RPI last year, Butler didn’t have it and I expressed my concerns going in the the Mallard Creek playoff game. I didn’t expect MC to put it on Butler the way they did but Butler wasn’t going deep in the playoffs last year.

Everyone that is complaining about E. Forsyth vs. Forsyth County, remember until the last year W. Forsyth and Glenn was strong. Carver use to be a powerhouse back during the late 90's and early 2000s, Parkland was too. However, we could ask what happen to W. Charlotte? They was a powerhouse all during the late 80's, all during the 90's, then during the early 2000's their program went down. Then it was Independence for 8 years I think, the Butler, then Mallard Creek & Catholic, Wellington, now Chambers. What about E. Meck, N. Meck, W. Meck or Olympic or Harding???? Just like Coaches, kids want to have the best opportunity and exposure. That is why so many NC Coaches have retired from here and moved to coach SC...EXAMPLE TOMMY KNOX {West Charlotte, Independence, Duke and Dutch Folk}. Some reasons may be the community and atmosphere of the school and the style of play that a coach plays. If I was a good WR, why would a go play for a team that is 90% Run Dominated. Or if I know the Newspapers and News Stations cover certain schools others. Or a school has a crowd attendance of 4,000-8,000 or more vs a 200-800 crowd with cameras there and scouts showing up. Some coaches will put the highlights up on Maxpreps or Hudi and some don't. At the ends of the day, most of these kids are looking for a SCHOLARSHIPS!!!!

There is a big difference in a school board switching the type of enrollment from strict district lines to open enrollment like in Forsyth County, compared to Mecklenburg County which has never had open enrollment. What happened to West Charlotte, you could ask? Tommy KNOTTS (not Knox) coached there and then left, when he left, they weren't the same. He went to Indy, and they took off.

The honest truth about High School ball that most of these families and kids don't understand these days is that it doesn't matter what school you play for, if you are a high D1 talent, they will find you. I think a bigger factor for kids moving schools to the more successful programs in their area is for a chance to win a State Championship, and not really for a scholarship. If a kid/family wants a scholarship that bad, they can go to football camps/workouts at whatever universities/colleges during the summer. It's not going to change much, but it will atleast give them an opportunity to meet with coaches/scouts. It will be more of a benefit compared to switching schools.

I agree with 75% of what your saying is correct . The main thing for me as a parent is academics . Coaching also ays a big factor into it too. But to be honest safety is #1 for alot of parents . Example East Forsthy played Mt.Tabor at Tabor, A fight breaks out ,Peppered spray is released in the air everywhere to try to calm the situation. Do you really want your kid attending a school like that .. People will move there kid to safer places & take that money with them , East Forsthy is run like a college program . The parents that have there own business will fund them whatever they need or lack . Because its SAFE & the coaching staff there is probably the best in the state . They have a room for every position . The coach at East is so into his student-Athletes there . Another thing there willing to play anybody, anywhere . They know what they putting out in that field every friday night , Its always somebody different you notice every friday besides the main guys . Safety is key to keeping things in place .And when people know that there kid is safe , there going to buy in ......
You have made some good points here. I was at the Tabor / EF game. Unfortunately this could happen at any high school event. There was a fight. Security had use pepper spray to get it under control quickly. But those involved where not even students at Mount Tabor or East Forsyth. Winston-Salem as a whole has A LOT of problems and that spills over into the schools, yes all schools. East Forsyth from 8:55 to 3:40 is no different than Mount Tabor or several other schools. I know for a fact that there are teachers at East Forsyth that have requested transfers out of there because they did not feel comfortable there.

Nevertheless, Willert is a great coach and an even better person! He does run a top notch program. But there are other great programs with focused hardworking coaches... Coach Brown at Mount Tabor, Coach McGee at Reagan, Coach Snow at West Forsyth. And all of them consistently help a number of student athletes at their schools take their game to the next level. At the end of the day success does attract talent. But I think if WSFCS' superintendent, Trish McManus, stays with the system, open enrollment days are numbered. It has done tremendous damage to most schools in Forsyth country. If school choice ended today, within 4 years, Parkland and North Forsyth would be able to field tremendously talented diverse football teams. Carver would be stronger. West Forsyth would be weaker. Mount Tabor would probably be about the same. Reagan would probably drop significantly (most middle class families in Forsyth county probably could not afford a house in Reagans district). East Forsyth would still be really good. But there would much more parity within the county and more competition and that is where everyone wins.

Parkland for about 4-5 years was ok this is so sad what has happened. I don’t think it can ever be “fixed “
Man, Parkland happened overnight. One season they were good, challenging for the top spot in the conference. Then next they were cellar dwellers, unsure as to when they will come out, if ever.

This is why I did leave Forsyth county. We were never ever going to be able to give the kids at Parkland what West East Reagan and Tabor could give kids.

IIRC, Parkland got the former head coach from Walkertown as OC. He was basically running the show.

He left and it was back to the bottom.

It just takes the right person and a little time.

Not true that’s not true. He was there for the 3-8 season but was not there the following years. Derrick Sharpe was the OC for the next three years and Springston did not coach

I agree with you. It is 2022 and social media is everywhere. If you are a good player at a lousy program then the college scouts will find you. Now, maybe I can see a big time high school WR talent not wanting to play at a school that runs a triple option offense and puts up maybe 5 passes a game. But all in all, I say school choice like they have in Forsyth Co. is a crock. If you live in the Carver district then you go to Carver, end of story. I hate to see schools like Carver and Parkland that were powers 20 some years ago completely fall apart and become laughingstocks. As well, I am not sure why school boards can't see the down side of school choice. Does the WS/FC board really like seeing Carver's enrollment go down the drain and for the school to be a shell of what it once was?
