When our offense plays more uptempo(aka Simpson) it is a MUCH different team!

While I was down on Simpson I have been consistent in saying high tempo

He played great, but dont anoint him quite yet.....Potential is there for sure.
I'm not saying Geo's shoes are now full...
Just he has some energy and is a threat to beat his man and get to the rim. Our other guards, just get stifled when they don't have space.

It's one of 20 B1G games.....but 2 standout games as bookends of the B1G season.....Indiana at the RAC with Cliff in foul trouble and tonight at PSU.

Simpson doesn't solve an entire offensive problem, but he offers some solutions.

No time to relax, gotta play well at Minnesota and find a way to get Mulcahy and Hyatt back on track.

It was Caleb's defense on Pickett, Oskar bailing out RU with 2 big 3s and Cliffs perimeter and interior defense. Add in Spencer and if you get anything going forward from Mulcahy and Hyatt and solid minutes from Simpson off the bench, there's enough to get things done.

having Simpson with ball should help Paul as much as anyone. It doesn’t have to fall on his shoulders to run the O all the time.

We need Paul if we want to make some noise in March

Hope this is a sign that team is starting to gel & overcome after having to fill the Mag void. Knew it would take time to adjust, but man it was a rough 5 game stretch that provided many doubts of it happening

What is your obsession with our good players transferring. FYI Cam Spencer is prob a top 15 transfer this season and you want him to not do his last year as well.
I would prefer them to play from the bench but I skip that step because it’s probably not practical. I’d rather grab another transfer guard and give that guard assuming better quality and Simpson most of the minutes at 1-2x. Cam probably would come off the bench if asked.

Simpson grew some hair on his balls tonight. Mulcahy needs a position change to SF in some sets when he and DS are in the floor at the same time.

Remember the comeback was completed with Simpson and Palmquist on the floor and Mulcahy and Hyatt on the bench.

Nothing against Paul, but it almost needs to be two different platoons between Derek and Paul.

When Derek has the ball in his hands, surround him with spot up shooters (Cam, Oskar, Aundre), Caleb and Cliff. Cliff benefits from Derek’s drives because if he beats his man, the center might have to come over and help and if Derek misses, Cliff can clean up. Shoot, Derek’s threat to drive could even open up Dean for some pick and pop opportunities, if he’s getting minutes.

If Paul’s got the ball in his hands and Derek is resting, let him milk the shot clock, while some critical players are resting. He needs slashers/cutters surrounding him, so that he can actually be creative and take advantage of his passing ability. Sprinkle in some bench players that are willing to spend high effort for hopefully some easier buckets. (maybe Jalen for Caleb or Cam, Antoine for Cliff)

Guys he has had 2 or 3 games like this all season. Maybe next year he will have 6 or 7 games like this. Hard to imagine he turns into an overnight star.

Games like this give the other team problems game planning for us going forward...we have options the other teams have to account for...even if it's just a little bit. Oscar and Simpson getting meaningful minutes in February!!! Aundre has a hot hand some games. Paul will be back. We're not so one dimensional/predictable every night. Go RU!

We ran high pick and roll with Derek and Cliff more than we have done with Paul and Cliff but the difference was after the pick was set ,Derek kept on going to the basket or pulling up for the mid range something Paul refused to do. That has to be a staple. Michigan ran high PNR with Pup and Hunter against us over and over against us and Pup pulled up and hit 4 or 5 mid range shots as part of his 16 points . Derek can give us that option that has been sorely missing because of Paul’s reluctance to shoot or inability to turn the corner. . Paul has had 5-6 subpar games and I cringed when Pike put him back in the game and then pulled a stall after we got it tied and Paul almost blew it , lost the ball causing their run out and giving Penn State the lead again by 2 and then Derek ‘s bailed us out with the High PNR and hard drive and 1 to the basket.

Pike is incredibly loyal but Paul’s relentless dribbling failing to swing the ball around , hesitating , refusing to shoot , is the primary reason for our offensive struggles. Plus it slows the game down which is doubly bad for our offense as we have shown in every game we play better uptempo than the 30 second death struggle half court offense.

No milking the shot clock. That’s the root of Paul’s problems. Clock runs down and he doesn’t have the speed to get by the defender and make something happen. Quick ball movement is what we need with him as PG, starting early in the clock.
Jalen for Cam? Antoine for Cliff? Milk the clock and we’re going to score? Whoa!

When Paul had his dominant stretch last year, he was much quicker and decisive with his moves once he got the ball in the lane.
His indecisiveness is hurting him and the team this year.

at least it provides some new wrinkles. We desperately needed a shakeup but Pike is still going to have to navigate the trade offs with the lineup

The team lacks speed quickness and ability to get by their man

Get Simpson going with the PnR. Cliff draws so much attention that Derek can hit the jumper or get to the rim
