I am not criticizing Fran. On the contrary I think he gets a bad rap. He started his time in the BIG with a few eruptions and carrys that reputation to this day. In my opinion he has settled down quite a bit. If someone knows the number of times other BIG coaches have gotten technicals and or been tossed this year , I don't think Fran is at the top of the list.First, as the announcers pointed out, Fran was right. That was a 10-second violation. No doubt about it. So, once again a coach is right and gets T'd up and tossed while the refs, who were wrong, go on about their merry way.
Second, the first T was for being out of the coach's box? LOL Every coach in the country is out of the "coach's box" virtually the entire game. Izzo is on the floor as much as most of his players. Collins was out of the coach's box multiple times, and he was livid and being held back by his assistants in Iowa City, and although he was given a T, he didn't get tossed, despite behavior at least the equal of Fran's last night. So there's that.
Fran is no different than the majority of college coaches in terms of his relationship to the refs during a game. Do you watch college basketball other than Iowa? But it seems Fran became an easy target early in Iowa City, and although he has generally restrained himself pretty well given the state of officiating, he is held to a different standard than Izzo, Howard, and most everyone else. If not, Izzo, Howard and many others would be tossed every damn game.
So rag on Fran if you want, but he was right last night, as he usually is. And whatever chance Iowa may have had ended right there. Instead of a 10-second violation, NW scored on a layup, hit a bundle of free throws and got the ball back, all because the refs couldn't count to 10. So it was about a 10-point swing in a matter of seconds. But no, refs don't decide games. LOL
BTW: If you want to criticize Fran, do so on his team's repeated failure to show up on the road. With the exception of Rutgers, the Hawkeyes have been pretty bad away from Iowa City. And last night, with second place and NCAA seeding on the line, the Hawkeyes embarrassed themselves once again. The Hawkeyes are still the only team Ohio State has beaten, and by 16 points at that, in its last 13 games. If Iowa isn't gonna give a better effort than last night and most nights on the road, they might as well forfeit and donate the money saved to the Children's Hospital. The players have to get themselves ready to play, but the head coach has to share some of the blame. It's just pathetic.
Seems like most of the time his temper is aimed at his team.I am not criticizing Fran. On the contrary I think he gets a bad rap. I believe they actually go by the officials count vs. the clock. That at least is true in HS, but think it is the same in college.First, as the announcers pointed out, Fran was right. He is demonstrative at times. Overall, the past 2-3 years Fran has been much more calm/sedate on the sidelines, which I thought had served him very well. And Iowa's performance the past 3 years has been good. There are times when a coach needs to get his point across or even get a T to either prove a point or stand up for his team.Fran never seems to ask for clarification or reasons for calls that go against his team. He is immediately red hot angry and is positive he has seen something that the refs have not. His attitude is not doing him or his team any favors.
I stand corrected. Now they go by the shot clock in college basketball.
