Being a Murray grad and watching Beamer Saturday got me thinking. Did UK miss the boat in not hiring him. He was in Kentucky's backyard. What could he and Foster have done at UK?

I believe Beamer played at VaTech so being a former player made it a natural hire for him and the school. He was like 42-23 in his six years at Murray so I'm sure if anyone could know today how he was going to work out, it would have been a no brainer. But back then I'm sure it was looked at as him doing a good job but nothing special. We had a similar situation with Roy Kidd at EKY, good success but at that level he wasn't considered. Later in the 90s we dropped down and took Mumme from Valdosta State.
We also had an opportunity to hire Howard Schnellingberger(sp), All American End at UK, unfortunately we had our usual basketball promoter as our AD!!!!
Not hiring Howard S. might have been the biggest mistake that the administration made back then besides allowing the Bear to leave.
Hard to tell if he was a serious candidate back then...VT is his alma mater...so it was probably his goal from the time he started coaching...
as for the could've, would've, and should've game...
seems like a lot of coaches have passed through some school in kentucky...
