Possibly the worst volume shooter in the nation.

Avg
FG% 3.5-11.3 31% (leading the team is shots taken, 135 total, next closet R.Johnson with 100 attempts at 43%)
3Pt 1.7 -6.9 24% (averaging 7 3Pt attempts a game, 83 total, next closest is Sword who avgs less than 2, 21 total)

Can we stop the madness. No more 3s Fred....just stop. Stick to SHORT range jumpers and drives.

Whats Ray thinking on this? Is it mental for Fred? Is he lights out in practice?

This is not new news. His senior year of HS - 60-195 from 3 - 30.7%

I think what we want to see this year is Ray's framework for how he is going to turn things around. He clearly has made a decision that Fred's shooting isn't hurting us, or he would have shut it down already.

It's a good idea

maybe 3 years from now when maybe it matters, he will have practiced his 3 pointer so much he can actually be consistent with it maybe.

I think Winsome was similar, in that he didn't shoot well his FR year. But e didn't shoot that much either.

I remember seeing Thomas last year and thinking "he likes to shoot. A lot."

Would you like sWord to shoot more threes? He's connecting on 14% of his attempts (3-21).
Borchert, you say? He's 3-19, for 16%.

Other than Jalen, no one on this team can shoot. Just deal with it and know that the shot attempts are probably not going to change as we enter conference play. We can only hope the percentages find a way to climb.

Who else should be taking those shots?

I understand your point, but I think this year in particular it's hard for Ray to tell Thomas to stop shooting so much when there is literally no one else to take up the slack. Maybe when Jalen is back and into full playing shape again, Ray will tell Thomas to be more selective.

Remember, we are also playing with no real point guard, so the offense isn't likely to look like it will in the future either.

I would top 20% at the Sanderson regularly against 5'5" white guys

And I'm lights out in my church league.

Ray would just have to let me walk down the court, not play defense, and take myself out of the game every 2 minutes.

Thomas takes 11 shots a game, 7 of those are 3s. He has proven he can't make the 3 at a high enough %.
Agreed, someone has to shoot, and it can be Thomas for that matter, but he (and Sword too for that matter) should cut out the 3 ball. If they combine for 3 or 4 attempts per game rather than the current 9, that would be an improvement.

If he shoots 3 less 3's a game, and turns them into 2's, but only makes one, then he'd be better off shooting the 3's in case one goes in. +1 *

All this, fresh off his 6-13 performance from the field...and 2-7 performance from 3...

He's a freshman being asked to carry the work load. Give him time. The numbers will improve as the season(and his career) goes along...

Fred is talented and will only get better. He does have a good mid range game and yes he likes to shoot. But he can get his shot. May not be a great shot, but the kid can get open enough and rise to get off a shot On this team right now, that is a huge plus. Jalen will make them better with his shooting but Fred needs to keep on firing We just need to hope in year 3 of Ray these freshmen are battle tested and improved and hope we add a big man somewhere. It's hard but i see promise in Fred, Sword, Ware. And I can even see Roquez being much better his senior year. Who woulda thunk that last season?

Bottom line, this is a learning get experience year for these freshmen and Ray. Let em play and figure it out. They play hard even though they are getting their *** handed to then against decent teams.

I know this season is awash and these observations probably won't matter in the W-L at the end. But it's fun so here we go.

Craig Sword is shooting FT's at 51% Do they not practice these in Alabama? He's arguably our best on the drive though so him getting fouled on the layup attempt is a negative. Unfortunately we have nobody else with the ball skills to get in and dish out so we'll have to settle for his missed FT on occasion. With Jalen back his 3 pt attempts should be limited to 2 per game. Him and Borchert are both around 15% from 3. Both should cease. We have no shooters, compensate.

Fred however is 77% from the stripe, so his 'motion' in the offense should be more focused on getting to the hoop through the backdoor. Now that Jalen is back he will be our primary outside shooter. Fred has taken 46% of our team 3's hitting an abysmal 24%. That can't continue.

Gavin has been a very good surprise as his level of play is more advanced than I gave him credit for. It will be interesting watching him compete against the seasoned bigs from here on out.

Roquez started off strong but has been lost lately. He's obviously out of his league talent/size wise so he he'll have to out-effort guys. With our lack of shooters he must have success for our team to have success.

Thats the best we can hope for a few wins with the absolute lack of shooters and skilled talent. IJ and Jacoby will upgrade from Bloodman next year. Ndoye will give Gavin relief. Applewhite provides depth. Sword and Fred will improve. If Ray can develop these kids then 2015-16 can be a very competitive year.

Fred Thomas will be a good three point shooter for us. That is why we recruited him. But by God let's tell him to stop shooting three's before conference play starts his freshman year. Genius.

Even if he was Steve Kerr he shouldn't take half our 3's. Instead of settling for 7 three point attempts a game we involve him differently is all. He develops a more all-around game and we benefit. Win-win. He'll develop his shot in time but there is no need for 7 treys a game especially at a 24% mark.

Jalen is currently at 4 trey attempts per game to give some perspective
