one thing about Mississippi State, what would it be? Why? Hiring a certain coach instead of another, an AD, getting a certain recruit that didnt sign...whatever

Mine would be the location of our campus. I would go back and convince the Governor and Legislature to let the old plantation owners have north Mississippi. The state university for Mississippi should be located near the capital and a campus located just over in Madison county would be perfect. I feel this would have been an even bigger boost to enrollment, very helpful in recruiting, and given us much more success over the last 125 years

Football - Fire Sherrill earlier than we did and hiring Jimbo Fisher instead of Croom.

Baseball - Hiring Manieri (sp?) after Polk retired the first time

Basketball - Institute the 1 year rule 10-12 years ago and force Bender, Ellis, and Outlaw to play a year in college. Also, convince Donte Jones to stay in school one more year and keep Bullard from pistol whipping people. We never had a chance to really build on that Final 4.

have one good idea by in the 20's or 30's (whenever he was gov) and that was to move the university to jackson on the site where umc is now and i believe the plan was to consolidate st college ole miss & southern there into one state university. it didn't fly. too bad imo. with one state u we would be a juggernaut.

Everything would've taken care of itself after that. We would have continued as the football juggernaut that we were at the time, and no Indians would have been buried under Scott Field.

Just sayin'.

and take him back in time with me. Step 2: kidnap Larry Templeton and replace him with Byrne as the AD. Step 3: take the time machine and drop LT off somewhere in the Victorian era since most of his athletic policies seemed to eminate from there.

He turned it down when we were 6-1, and four asswhippings later we had no bowl bid. Bye bye Charlie......hello LT.

I would also go back to the day that Coach34 became a State fanand spray paint him maroon, pummel him with a cowbell while singing the MSU fight song, and let Tonka chew on his leg. Anything to turn him another direction with his fan "support".

Edited to add a couple more things:

1. Rebuild Old Main.
2. Hire a new architecture firm, starting in the 60's - to avoid the 70's designs implemented across campus and ultimately the Hunter Henry Center.

-campus location
-the hiring of crooms
-hiring polk the second time
-the one year rule in basketball not being soon enough
-medical program(maybe not very realistic)
-give it to dixon on the 1 yard line four times in a row(ok maybe not important enough)</p>

I think the campus location would be the single biggest positive change for the university. If we were around the Jackson area if would have helped tremendously with enrollment (and thus boosters), programs (I think we'd have a med school too or at least a very nice pre-med program) and facilities.

Hire Paul Manieri rather than Polk II in 2001. Manieri would have taken over a relatively young team that had just won the SEC Tournament and went to a Super Regional and had Paul Maholm, Papelbon, and Craig Tatum on it- three future big leaguers.

Our recruiting would have been way more up to date, and there's no telling what would have happened. But, I'm pretty sure that we would not be where we are now.

And I'm also sure that LSU would have probably hired him away from us, but we could then replace him with either Cohen or O'Conner at that point.

offer a scholarship to Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Brett Favre, and Steve McNair as a qb rather than db.

not to give the ball to fred reid at the goal line against maine. i knew as soon as they handed it to him he was fumbling, and i knew as soon as maine recovered that they were driving it 95 yards down our throat for the win.

Someone posted it needed to be closer to the state capital, and I agree. Look at FSU, tOSU, LSU, NCSU etc. All in their state's capital. I'm not saying put it in downtown Jackson necessarily. Madison would be a good choice, except for it was little more than a train station at the time the college was founded (much like The Jewel, I guess). Clinton would have been another good choice. Heck, Vicksburg would have been a good choice. Maybe if it would have been a college town it wouldn't have been the vortex of suck that it was growing up.

In 1878, Jackson was still rebuilding from being burned down by the Union army and Vicksburg was completely destroyed.

I read something that said the choices by the Reconstruction-era government (who were not about growth of the Southern states) were.

1. Combine it with the major state university in Oxford. (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Tennessee did this)
2. Urban area of Meridian - largest city in Mississippi at the time (NC State was in Raliegh, Alabama A&M was placed in the area of Huntsville, Florida A&M was put in Tallahassee, Southern University was put in Baton Rouge - most of the HBCU land grants were placed in urban centers)
3. Rural area of Starkville or Louisville (Starkville was obviously chosen because of more fertile farmland, but Alabama, Texas and South Carolina were states that followed suit by placing their Morrill Act schools in a rural area)
