..but you have to realize when you are growing 167 pot plants in your house in the state of Mississippi, you are screwed 10 ways to Sunday if you get caught.

Just as an aside, I was expecting a picture of a hippie couple.

Instead I see a couple who look like they have reserved seating at Dudy-Noble.

So our society is going to pay for 30 years on incarceration for two people, just because they were growing weed. Put them on probation for the rest of their lives, have a cop stop in by their house every other week randomly to make sure they are not growing anymore weed and have them take a weed test whenever you feel like testing.<div>
</div><div>If they mess up and grow it or sell again, firing range. </div><div>
</div><div>At least this way it only cost our government a little bit of time and generally bullets are cheaper than 24/7 incarceration.</div><div>
</div><div>People deserve to take personal responsibility for their problems, but after a second chance why waste money on someone that no longer contributes to society.</div><div>
</div><div>Or don't punish them because weed laws are retarded.</div>

Seems like a no brainer: pot laws are retarded. I personally can't stand potheads, but my god, they're only hurting themselves.

I am not going to pick on you for thinking that way.

Because both our state legislature & federal legislature are full of "lawmakers" who would think your idea is nothing short of brilliant.

out there for a reason. A few weeks in the pokey should be strike 2. Killin' should be strike 3. Of course, this punishment would only be for non-violent drug offenders. The rest of the criminal justice system would remain intact. It's only logical.

you, Henry, are a DUBMASS! Order it from one of the Cali legal medicinal growers and when you get caught, you only get caught with a taste of it, not a freaking buffet. Sure it will cost you some $$$ to buy it but not gonna cost you and your wife the rest of your damn life.

the law is. Two upstanding people who actually contribute to society in a meaningful and positive way are screwed because of something they were doing in their private residence. This, and the "war on drugs" in whole, is a giant waste of taxpayer money.

Henry is from my hometown and I've known him pretty much all my life. We used to hang out together when I lived in Jxn. Since I moved away(1992 or so) I haven't had a lot of contact with them but have talked to him on occasion. He's a pretty decent guy that just likes to smoke his weed. Beverly, to my knowledge, doesn't partake at all but gives him freehand to do so. Don't think any of the kids hit it. This isn't his first rodeo, he's been busted for growing before and did time at a minimum security federal facility. Back in the early 90's or late 80's.He took full blame so the wife got a hall pass on that one. They also lost a vehicle and a few bucks in that last escapade. I don't think it's going to be so easy this time. I see them both doing some time. I don't think 30 yrs is fair but they'll both probably do some time over this one.

Now I know some of you Sixpackers are gonna ask so I'll just let you know that yes, back in the day, I have smoked some of his weed and it was some of the best shitI've ever smoked, including the **** I smoked during my brief layover in Amsterdam. It's been since the 90's or so but it was some primo **** back then.

Yet smoking a little weed brings out the drug warrior in half the population. Who cares if it makes you feel good? So do beer, sex, chocolate cake, sunshine, and hitting a great tee shot. We aren't going to ban those, are we?<div>
</div><div>/never smoked it, but been around enough people who have that I know it ain't a big deal</div>

Any reasonable person thinks marijuana laws are just too strict. If these two would get caught selling that much marijuana, without all the plants, their sentence would be less. Which is worse? Growing? Or selling ?

I mean this with all sincerity.....just what exactly is the point of smoking pot?
I do not and have never smoked, drank, injected, inhaled anything along the line of drugs or alcohol of any type. I'm no angel and I'm not trying to preach, but I was never exposed to anything, even cigarettes, by my parents, thus it was of NO temptation to me.
Is it simply for the buzz, like alcohol? Do you feel euphoric? Just curious as to what draws you to something illegal that can wind up putting you on the front page of the C-L.
I appreciate your honest answers.

Haven't spoke to him in several years. If I had to guess, judging from the amount seized, I'd have to say yes he was probably supplementing his income a little. The fact that this is his second time to be busted for growing is what willhurt him the most.

Growing weed seemed to be his best talent. He's not exactly the brightest bulb on the tree. If he had any smarts about him he would've moved way the hell out into the sticks to do this, or to one of the states where it's legal.

He and his wife met at ole miss, if this adds anything to the equation.

Why the hell wouldn't you just get you a couple of acres in the country to grow that stuff? It's in my neighborhood but not one of my immediate neighbors, but even I noticed how out of place the shed out back looked. I'm sure the ones that lived close to him had to know what was going on.

It has different effects on different folks. Apparently, his staff saw some type of improvement in the games. I didn't see any of that but I was usually drunk during most of the games. I can only assume pot allows the blind to see. Maybe the staff was using it for "medicinal" purposes.

and then maybe you will understand the alcohol part. Or after work, on the golf course, at a sporting event, on a Saturday, while listening to a MSU baseball series on the radio or watching one on tv, while grilling, at the pool,......hell just reading SPS and posting in this thread is a good time for one. I love a good cold beer.

My Dad was like you and had never drank, smoked, nothing. When he was 55 I finally got him to drink a beer, and now we often have a few beers after a day of work or while watching a State game on tv.....there's just something about reflecting on memories with your dad over a cold one. Cheers

Before you comment on it. Possession with intent is the same as manufacturing. And the penalty is not less than 10 nor more than 30 years. Not to mention the fact that if you think a thirty year sentence means 30 years in jail, then, well, you simply have no idea.

who have jobs and pay taxes,"? The cited article certainly doesn't say that. Is it because they appear to be middle aged, middle class folks? Or is it because of where they live?

You can't judge a person by their appearance. Several serial killers have looked perfectly normal, even attractive.

With 167 plants, they were probably selling the stuff. If they used that much for themselves only they'd be stoned 24/7. If they're selling, then they could afford an upscale neighborhood (I don't know if their neighborhood is upscale or not since i know little of the Jackson area, but from some of the comments it seems like it must be).

Personally, I think the marijuana laws are just fine because it's use leads to the use of other drugs (my opinion only ... the matter is admittedly debatable).

But if you don't like the laws, take action to change them instead of blatantly ignoring them. And don't use the analogy of speeding ... it's not the same thing. It's more comparable to prohibition laws.

these guys were distributing, likely to the school she was elementary school teacher of.... so hurting no one? nah.

you are 100% right on the 10-30. And you are 100% right that they will not do the full time. But the thing I think you're overlooking is that a 30 year sentence excludes the 25% parole date. This is approx how much time they will do (which is all too much in my opinion when you consider a prisoner cost 32k in tax dollars a year)

10 year sentence for the crime- They would be eligible for parole after serving 25% of the time which is 31.5 months. They could work at least 6 months off that with good behavior, now 25.5 months. They would be eligible, under this code, for release under house arrest when they are 18 months away from the closest release date. So best case scenario would be 7.5 months imprisonment on a 10 year sentence. This would cost taxpayers $20k

20 year sentence- eligible for parole in 60 months. Knock off six for good behavior 54. Then subtract 18 months for house arrest release and their best case scenario here is 36 months. This would cost taxpayers $96k

30 year sentence- no 25% release date, not eligible. They would actually get out fastest here on ers and not parole. Long story short best case here is 174 months. Thats 14.5 years!!! This would cost taxpayers $464k

FYI, all of this can be found on the mdoc website with a little research. Completely nuts.
