Opinions aside on "how ready" Frost is, I would've welcomed this a thousand times over Riley.
It is certainly "feel good" if you are Husker. And I am sure our fan base would love this type of news if related to the Nebraska program. But the ultimate judge will be the record and how the UCF program improves (recruiting, strength, etc.) under Frost. My hope in all this is that a viable alternative is being built should NU need to make a change down the road. Similar to the "Monte Kiffen crew" had TO left for Bolder or some other event occurred in the 70's and 80's where a new coach was needed.

Well, I don't know anything about Held. But according to the article, he has a less than .500 record at a normal JUCO powerhouse. That's not really the type of hire that would float most casual NU fans boats scaling that decision up to a Division 1 blue blood level.

Held's only going to be an assistant. I fail to see how having an assistant with 12 years of head coaching experience is a bad thing, and he turned around multiple small programs before NEO. Plus he will bring a ton of JUCO recruiting connections. I'd take that over many of the guys on our current staff.

Frost also pulled Troy Walters away from Colorado. Seems like he's putting together a pretty good staff so far.

That's the kind of double standard that I can't stand. If this guy had no Husker ties, nobody would say a word about this hire or say there was anything great about it. But for the sole reason that he played for us, this suddenly is something great. I don't know about anyone else, but losing does not feel any different to me just because a coach has worn an "N" on his helmet at some point. Anybody feel any better about our baseball team losing and failing to make the NCAA tournament 3 of his 4 seasons just because Darin Erstad is coaching?

Who are the many on our current staff that you would take Held over?

Don't know about Helm, but very interested to see what kind of a staff Frost assembles.

This is the kind of stuff that I can't stand. Take away the fact you knew this guy had played for Nebraska, and you would have considered this something of a meh hire for us. Some of you cannot remove the knowledge that somebody played for Nebraska from your analysis.

Please tell me how a hiring a position coach with 12 years of head coaching experience and major JUCO recruiting connections is a bad thing. Especially for a mid-major program like UCF. Most of our assistants have only been assistants for losing programs. They were all meh hires. Bray is the only one that seems to be meeting expectations so far.

What's OK for UCF isn't necessarily OK for NU. If we had hired this guy here, would I be criticizing it? No. But I also wouldn't be touting it as some kind of awesome hire either and neither would anybody else if he didn't have the Nebraska background.

yep that juco recruiting connections are huge. especially when you your going to run a different system than the one that was already being run

Are you thinking of Bo's staff? Cause I can't think of one coach on this staff with less cred than Held. Hell we have 3 Defensive Coordinators on our defensive staff

What does this even mean? "Allot of Huskers" have said no, huh? Are you talking about Bo? Not a husker, even though he was a coach. He wasn't around when frost played. Are you talking about eichorst? He wasn't around when frost played either. So who are you talking about?

If frost proves to be a good head coach, at some time in the near future we will go after him. Many have stated that Nebraska is his dream job, while some others have stated otherwise. Either way, if he is successful, the Nebraska job will be his for the taking down the road, no matter what "allot of Huskers" have said.

If he can get UCF to at least 6-6 next year and Riley rolls out the same crap, I say we cut our losses and bring him home.

I'm not a big Frost fan, but that doesn't mean I dislike him.

Frost's tangibles:
Starting QB for a national championship team.
OC for a national championship contender.

Would anyone be talking about Frost if he wasn't a former Husker? Maybe, but probably not. While his credentials do not prove that he will be a successful head coach, there is success and (one can infer) desire to succeed in his background.

I'm going to guess that Frost will be contractually bound to be around UCF a few years like Herman mentioned he was at Houston. In the other thread, my theory for the "Frost at all costs" crowd was hang on to Riley for 4 years, and get Frost after his year 3. You hire another coach before then, you run the real risk we don't get Frost.

He hasn't even won a game yet. Who knows what kind of a manager the guy is. BIG corporations don't hire young hotshots with no managerial experience. Let Scott have a few years of building a program and recruiting relationships before we look at hiring him. He has A LOT to learn on how to be the head man yet. I hope he has huge success and has a shot at becoming our HC in a few years if so.

and you base that thought on......
Couple scenarios/opinions mentioned here in the past:
1) Frost was interested last year but didn't get a call. Would you want to work for a guy who recently thought you weren't good enough for the job?
2) May not want to be involved with an AD that may have only mixed support from the admin/fans - see fans booing SE during MSU game intro

There are no guarantees w coaching hires. Our fan base would have raised holy hell had we hired Dantonio out of Cincinnati with a 18-17 record and an 11-11 conference record. Let's see how frost does. He is going to have a lot of inexperienced asst coaches

My feeling is Frost and co. Will build up UCF and after successful 3-5 seasons he will come back as HCSF as Riley retires! Then we will head back to glory!! GBR!

I have to add, Williams our WR coach has been very good and has a passing grade as well. I wasn't solid at all on Banker but once we got our starters ! back on defense, our defense did start looking good or at least better

Frost took a pay cut (2 mil a year) so he has around 2 million to hire good coaches (G5). He's calling the plays and the coach your referencing was brought in for his Juco recruiting knowledge. Skill coach, not a major DC or OC. Good hire imho.*

Strongarm517. Yes. That's him
I'm glad a couple other people remember that interview. That's one of the funniest lines ever in a Husker interview, but people seemed to forget about it quickly in the midst of that eventful season.
