FWIW, Doug Mathews on Cam Newton

Doug Mathews, former UT assistant coach, UT insider and radio host said today that he went to Cam Newton's game last week in Oklahoma and that he came away very impressed. He also said that he fully expects him to be at State next year. He bases this on what the coaching staffs at both Blinn and at UT are telling him. Sounds encouraging.

He seems like the total package. Plus, with him and Russell it makes you prepare for 2 schemes. If he can bring in a few Juco corners we will be in business.

I think if we got Newton, he would be the starting QB period. I think that Russell would be the back-up, and possibly even Stegall depending on what happens this spring.

Chris Relf's situation would be interesting to watch. He will be a junior as will Newton. I do think that Relf has some value, of course who knows how long he is suspended for, and if he will even be back. I'd actually like to see an A-11-ish type formation with both Newton and Relf in the shotgun where you don't know where the snap is going to go. I'd also like to use Relf some as a QB/WR/RB. Line him up in the slot and let him use his 240 pound frame in space against a LB or safety, or just simply running the ball as a RB or a QB.

Russell will get some snaps as the back-up and ease into SEC play, which is what he needs to do.

Relf had zero value (as a qb) and has found away to #!## up in EVERY game he's been in.....at least 2 of his TO's have turned into TD's the other way. Relf under center is the oppositions wet dream.

The funny thing about the pics he threw against auburn et al is that he had an entire semester to throw the ball and locked in on one guy and threw it to another zip code. Please bring back tray rutland 1st.

If you wouldn't have typed in Relf, I would have thought you were talking about Tyson Lee. I would have figured it out though because Lee has easily had more than two of his turnovers result in points for the other team.

I like it. I think that would be badass being able to line up Relf and Newton in the backfield and having the defense questioning every second of it. That could be scary for a lot of defensive coordinators with two QBs posing threats at you.

are telling a former UT assistant coach, I have it on good authority from an anonymous poster on SPS that he has a "source" who tells him Newton can't stand Mullen.
