I sure hope so becuase you also have to remember most of those kids playing football is their way out of the neighborhood and that team is the pride of that community. My guy felling is that nobody is going to care what strikes are all about, just saying.
Getting good grades and test score is also a way out. With the proper grades/scores, kids from ESL would get a full-ride from many schools.

Everyone is not a scholar. Not sure why people try to eliminate other ways of being successful. There aren't a lot of kids that make 27 plus on the ACT there academic scholarships are not an option for some. On the other hand if you score 19 or 20 and can run, catch, etc. you can attend that same school as the kid with the 27. Is that wrong to want to take advantage of that opportunity?

The Union and the BOE were to resume talks today in the ESL teacher strike. Haven't heard if anything came of the talks.

If last week is any indication, I believe they cancelled the game pretty early on Thursday. It would seem they'd need a deal hashed out tonight in order to get board approval and rank & file approval tomorrow and/or Thursday in order to get school opened by Friday, in order to have a game. It doesn't look promising.

What are you talking about? The article says the wreck happened Tuesday evening. How does the strike or greedy adults play a part in this? Just give it up already. Feel sorry for those involved, but your taking it a little too far.

Tentative agreement, if the state oversight panel OKs this deal.

At the heart of the issue was the teacher demand that after 11 years, they reach the top of their pay grade. The district wanted 21 steps.

In the "real world," what 33 year old gets to the top of the pay grade? Hell, how often does a 44-year old reach that pinnacle? Nevertheless, on Monday, those teachers can get back to doing their stellar work again ...

Per BND:
The district and the teachers’ union — East St. Louis Federation of Teachers Local 1220 — reached an agreement approved by the union, school board and district’s financial oversight panel on Friday.

The contract includes a one-time stipend of $3,000 for certified teachers employed as of June 30 for the 2014-15 school year and another stipend of $3,000 for the current school year. For the next two school years, each teacher will receive a step increase.

The sticking point for the union was the number of salary steps in the contract. The teacher wanted to keep an 11-step schedule as they had in their previous contract, and the district proposed increasing it to a 21-step schedule. The new contract, which runs from 2014-18, has a 19-step schedule for teachers.

According to the new salary schedule, a first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree will earn $42,786 a year. After 19 years of service to the district that same teacher will earn $74,124 a year.

Was on strike for a month for $4K and 2 less steps. Very disappointing.

And as ESL returns to school, paid CPS protesters mob the Mercantile Exchange, blocking all entry and egress doors. They are protesting the rich and want their money for CPS.

Because Rahm wants CPS to get money, he won't send police to clear this dangerous situation. The Office of the State Fire Marshal will have to do that (OSFM is governor appointed).

So when I show skepticism about teacher strikes, I believe it is justified based on the terrible tactics I see happening by public sector employees who want to suck the dry already cow out of existence.
