Been watching a lot of old tournament games this week (thanks billionth) and was so impressed with Poythress during our run in the 2014 tournament. If i were Cal i would show Gabriel film on how much of a difference Poy made for us on that run, coming off the bench giving us pure energy, hustle and athleticism. If we can get that kind of effort out of Wenyen, i feel very good about our chances

I don't know how he disappeared so fast but it really hurt us. He was playing great for a few games and Kenny Payne said he was finally playing in games the way he played in practice and he thought we'd see him continue to improve. Seems like he's regressed almost every game. Seems like a great kid but it's a good thing Willis has stepped up because WG isn't playing well at all. They keep saying he's leaving after this year- I don't see him even close to having NBA talent at this point.

If he could just find a way to pull in 8-10 rebounds per game through this stretch, we'll be in VERY good shape.

If he can pour in 8 PPG also, we'll be national champs
He will be playing limited minutes. In the 18 mpg range. That's a lot of rebounds to average in that span.

Hell in hoping Bam averages that throughout the tournament.

Well if he's rebounding like that, his minutes should be increasing.

Hell, it'd be nice to be able to play both he and Willis together more. But they need to produce in order to do that

If we are playing that game can we hope the other bench guys magically become something they aren't too? Like Humphries becomes a double double guy, SKJ becomes a 5 star, Mulder becomes Doron Lamb, Wynyard becomes Tyler Hansbrough etc.

He won't earn a dollar in any league if he leaves. If he wants to leave he can only transfer. He has NO talent worth developing if he cannot even show he is comfortable on the court. He is a child in a man's body and has yet to learn how to use it. Desparately needs to come back. If he leaves, I will be furious. Since cal did give him all the chances to get better and it just means UK was NOT the right place for him. We should have invested more time in Willis and Humphries. This is the kind of recurit i would like to avoid, a kid that if things dont work out perfectly he doesn't just say, fine, stay another year and work harder, otherwise he used us and cost us.

I hope Willis plays well enough for Gabriel to barely see the floor... Not a knock against Gabriel but when Willis is playing well this team goes to another level...

No way He is ready for Pros. He looks like a 3 year guy to me. I will be suprised if he is pro ready after next year. He needs to stick it out and become a lottery pick in few years. He has that potential if he stays.

His family lives in poverty the kinda a poverty that a young man has struggled with the stress of it to get them out and you will be furious if he leaves?

I'm not 100% on this, but I think that one of Alex Poythress' thighs is about the same size as both of Wenyen Gabriel's (same thing for arms).

Good idea in concept, but very different players.

Right I'm sure Cal has never once showed any players film in 8 years

I just hope Wenyen does enough in the tourney to justify him leaving after this season, unlike Skal last season.

I now see why you have reputation of being an ******* around here.

Wanting/hoping that Gabriel goes from a 5/5 guy (his current average) to an 8/8 guy in the tournament is NOT that unrealistic.

At ALL.

But sure, go ahead and wish Wynyard becomes Tyler Hansborough and keep getting angry and sarcastic over bizarre things.

If he could add 25lbs of muscle mass...he would be lottery pick

Doubt it. He'd still be an average height PF with average athleticism and awkward movements on the basketball court. He'd just be heavier and stronger. Wouldn't prevent him from looking like a newborn giraffe trying to pump fake someone before haphazardly driving to the basket. Would help his rebounding and that's about it. He needs more than muscle to be a lottery pick.

I know they are very different players, but my thinking wasn't for him to be like Poy, just give us the effort Alex gave off the bench during that run. Get a 50/50 ball, get a big offensive rebound, hustle back in transition to save a basket. Poy made one or two plays each game that tournament run that were all effort and made a big difference in each game. So i don't think we need Gabriel to become something he hasn't been this season and get us a double double or anything but if he can just come in and give us some great hustle and effort off the bench like Poy did during that run in 14 i think it could make a huge difference.

Can't wait for tonight, we got a tough draw but if we can pull it off and go through UCLA, UNC and maybe Louisville and Duke for a championship i think many of us would have our favorite tournament run ever
